Overtaking

1969, I was on the A4 with a Foden doing 52… flat out when I was overtaken by something like a Leyland that must have been doing close on 70 AND it was dark !!! I still have nightmares now.

For you young whipper snappers, the old Foden with it’s 180 Gardner was flat out at 52.

I had that a few nights ago on the A15 heading to Sleaford. Got overtaken by a tanker who blasted his horn on the way past. I was doing 45. He was one of many that night that overtook me but the rest seemed gracious saying thank you when I flashed them back in.

Yeh, but they went a lot faster down hill in neutral ( aka paddyoverdrive)

Wasn’t really bothered by the fact I had been overtaken like I said it was a fairly safe manoeuvre and I did slow down as he overtook.

So why did you take his reg and company name then? :unamused: I hope this didn’t happen on the A65 in the early hours as it would’ve probably been me. I’ll overtake anything doing 40 along there, cars, vans, trucks, anything. Perfectly legal to do so and what speed I’m doing at the time would be no concern of yours or anyone else.

If you want to play at being a copper then join the [zb] police. Until then, keep your beak out and concrete on your own business. :bulb:

Oooohhhhh big bad wagon overtook me. I’m calling the police, Sally traffic, my local mp and dvsa. I will also write to the guardian.

Faz5837:
Should of know better than to ask opinions on a Saturday night.

I think the answers would have been similar any day or night of the week.

I’m just waiting for the back-pedalling and opinion change off the o/p that you normally get on here when they get a different response to the one expected

What’s people’s views on hgv’s overtaking hgv’s on a single carriageway?
This morning I was overtaken by another Hgv on a single carriageway. Was doing the speed limit 40mph and after about 5 miles of truck behind trying to push me to break the limit he overtook having to cross no overtaking markings on the road. To be fair the road was clear and the manoeuvre didn’t really cause any danger to anyone. I did take reg and company name but unsure if to bother reporting or not.
Is it actually legal to overtake as I thought not but not 100% sure to be fair. I just know I wouldn’t.

My view is this:
If on a S/C and another sister is in more of a rush than I am then I will realise this when they are up my chuff as I hover between 39 & 44 mph (I cant be arsed to keep watching the speedo to keep it on or fractionally below 40) I will choose to either go round a roundabout twice or pull into a layby to let them past.

It is up to said sister to judge when its safe to overtake (solid or broken white lines is their choice) although if theres a massive clear stretch I will give a little left indicator flash and help them out, I don’t really like to do this to often though.

During the overtake I will help my sister complete the manouvre as quickly as possible.

Or if I’m in a bad mood and I have another large vehicle up my chuff I will slow down and accelerate as they try and overtake, I will carry these sheananigans on for the duration and also block them on DC sections and take a long time to move away from roundabouts etc. I may also use the secondary brake to perform random sudden stops which they may not be able to react quick enough to so they hit the back of the trailer. If this happens I will then stop and reverse into them before they get out of the cab. Then I will grab my hammer and beat them to death with it.

One of these views I have made up…

You and probably many car drivers, had to do it many times around the North Norfolk coast, what with Tractors, Tourists, Elderly drivers and Chelsea Tractor drivers afraid of getting their 4x4 dirty.
And I’m known to be a bit of a plodder, used to get calls on the CB from other local truck drivers asking if I could pull over so they could crack on.

Trucker8oy:
Our continental brothers do it and they have no probs with it  i think its only that uk drivers feel that it is wrong to overtake someone who is f00king about on s/c.

Not only in a truck, you can almost hear the tutting from other drivers, when you overtake in a car these days. Instead they all bunch up so those who could overtake safely aren’t able to. Eventually they pluck up courage but instead of a nice controlled manourve it’s a kamikaze charge, no planning, no mirror, no signal.

To be fair to the OP,The solid white line is there for a reason. Usually to mark a hidden tip,a blind corner or a brow of a hill. If its dark, fair enough as you can see headlights of anything coming towards you. But what if it was a cyclist or a pedestrian coming from a broken down car to find help?
But like the other comments,if it was done safely then dont be a snider just keep your mouth zipped.

I can see at least 3 pages

A prick on a bike done that to me once on the A1, luckily I saw him in my mirror and moved tight to the central res. I think I put it on here at the time.
Always had respect for proper bikers but as in everything else you always get one.

Obviously the first one is made up

All this from asking people’s views on overtaking.
I used what had happened as an example and everyone getting on there high horse as I mentioned maybe reporting the driver which I never did.
Oh well never mind. Stay safe drivers!

I know think before you ask next time!!!

Well what did you honestly expect fella?

If you’d have just asked about the legality of the situation then fair enough.

Someone mentioned “tut-tutting” by those being overtaken, I think elderly drivers are the worst for this. Go past Tom and Doris en route to a garden centre or National Trust property, watch the driver start shaking their head as you pass them at such dangerous speeds that might break 40mph in a national speed limit zone.
I suppose the driver could be trying to shake that Werthers’ Original from his windpipe…

Fair 1 maybe me explaining what had happened confused the initial question.

So then is it legal for a Hgv to overtake a Hgv on a s/c?

for god sake just phone the police .
