Overtaking Hearses

whiplash:
I remember coming across a large funeral on a main (but narrow) road, where they walked the remains the few hundred yards from Church to Graveyard.I stopped the lorry, knocked off the engine, blessed myself, and let it pass by.
Surprising the amount of people that nodded their approval,or said thanks,as they filed past.2/3 minutes later on me way again.Maybe it`s an Irish thing■■?

I bet your boss was [zb] off huh, losing out on 3 minutes driving time.

I think people are making mountains out of mole hills. It’s all fake anyway and only done because “it’s the done thing”. Did any of you have any “respect” for this person when they were alive? Did you personally get to know them because you wanted to? The likely answer to those answers is “no”, so why suddenly become all respectful when they’re dead? Stinks of hypocrisy to me. It’s like those people who don’t have time for their family members when they’re alive and never see them nor give a [zb] about them, but yet when they are dead they’re there at the funeral to “pay their respects”. WTF. Can’t stand hypocrisy. It’s all about saving face and nothing else. :unamused:

This^. I have never been to a funeral and have no intentions of ever going to one.

errr you will go to 1, I bet !

Them funerals move quite slow.
and so do some of us.

I failed a C+E about 20 years ago,I was on a main road passing a T junction there was a limo. waiting to get out .I kept on making progress, could have let him out but how do you signal that within the Highway Code. This motor was not a hearse bye the way.The trainer had said make progress if possible or he will have you for obstruction. After I gave a good drive IMO,he failed me and said I should have given way to the funeral car,I said I made progresss and they were in no hurry.

My Brother was a Biker who was killed ten year ago, drove for Matthews at Yarmouth, was given an ■■■■■■ by a few of his Biker mates, Old Bill pulled two of them for number plate offences. :open_mouth:

What are your opinions on overtaking hearses? I know it’s not the thing to do on single carriageways but what about duals? Myself and 2 other lorries overtook one on the A40 Witney Bypass earlier and a couple of passengers in a car following invited us for Nescafe as we passed. I’ve always passed hearses on dual carriageways as I don’t see the point tagging along behind them-this one wasn’t even hittting 40mph so sod following that on a sc all the way to Oxford (I take it it was going to the crem’ as there were no flowers).

If it was a single id pull in for a break - ■■■■ sitting behind it for god knows how long. As for dual i wouldn’t even think twice just dont look at the coffin bad luck.

Just pass them if you can do so safely, I can see no reason not to.

yep defo would pass on a dc, i would slow down a bit so i wasnt thundering past, on a c i wouldnt pass them but i also wouldnt feel comfortable following a funeral, so would try a detour if possible

■■■■■ funerals are a pain-the buggers block off both lanes the (zb)nts

When my dad was buried in January I dont know if anyone passed us or not,I had other things on my mind.

■■■■ em. Their issue not yours. When I’m in my box I wouldn’t want everyone stacked up behind my car like a load of lemons with some faux ‘respect’ thing going on, and I reckon truth be known neither would most other folks. I get them all the time where I am as my gaff is not far from a cemetry on a 40 d/c and I’m always the rebel cruising past them whilst everyone else sits behind them like a bunch of clowns.

I await the frothing to start…

As some will know was my Dad funeral couple week ago have np with people passing but I DO have a prob with YOU if YOU come between the Hearse & the following cars

As a car found out when they pulled in behind ( although following my Dad there were 3 old lambretta ) the car didnt stay there long    with some creative driving

Look at it this way; you moved over to let them come past when they were in the ambulance :smiling_imp:

I always overtake them on a DC, it’s pretty naive to think the rest of the country should come to a stand still or sit behind in convoy because of a stranger they don’t know has passed away. I wouldn’t overtake them on single carriage way though, I got no problems in sitting behind them untill it opens up.

Well afaic if you come across a hearse and the following cortege you show your respect by allowing the vehicles to stay together :exclamation: If on a sc you overtake when it is safe to do so and you are sure you can get past all the convoy in one go !!!, on a dc it shouldn’t be a problem just don’t blow their doors off :exclamation: :exclamation:

I’m sure it all depends on how big the funeral cortege is and what type of road your’e on but I wouldn’t carve a funeral convoy up just to get a bit further up the road :exclamation: Most funerals only travel a few miles at the most and will usually only hold yers up for a few minutes or more and I’m sure the mourners will appreciate the little bit of restraint shown by drivers of big vehicles
But as I said on a dc not a problem to overtake just keep the speed down  On a sc only if your’e able to get past the whole cortege in one hit, without rocking the funeral cars :exclamation: :exclamation:

Dave Penn

The corpse wont mind whatever you do,

Trouble is the cortege is usually a lot more than the ‘marked’ cars though, so you don’t actually know you’re carving them up (at a roundabout for example).
