Overtaking Hearses

Rob K:
When I’m in my box I wouldn’t want everyone stacked up behind my car like a load of lemons with some faux ‘respect’ thing going on, .

It wouldn’t be a faux respect thing Rob. It could be a bunch of tooled up admirers waiting to attach top spots, shiny things and :open_mouth: reverse mudflaps to your box

or just pee on it

Well Rob if I come across a funeral cortege I always look out for cars loaded with fella’s bustin’ out of their white shirts and wearing crooked black ties and the women wearing little black dresses :open_mouth: :open_mouth:   And try not to carve them up just in case it’s some heavy dude who’s passed away and the mourners are all security staff who are quite happy to stop and give me a going over :open_mouth: :exclamation: :exclamation:

Regards
Dave Penn;

I remember coming across a large funeral on a main (but narrow) road, where they walked the remains the few hundred yards from Church to Graveyard.I stopped the lorry, knocked off the engine, blessed myself, and let it pass by.
Surprising the amount of people that nodded their approval,or said thanks,as they filed past.2/3 minutes later on me way again.Maybe it`s an Irish thing■■?

it shocked me when my family buried my nan in croydon. There were loads of people stopping and doing the cross on there chest

Irish or just pain ole dignity!

im with rob on this. cos when i go in a box the mrs knows that the hears shall go up the road at 50mph.

there’s nothing worse than accidently getting caught in the cortege  our yard is 150 yrds from a cemetary and several times i’ve pulled out the gate when i think it’s passed only to discover it hasn’t! it’s quite difficult not to stand out in an artic   normally i’m quite happy to wait until they’ve passed, or even hold up traffic to make sure the cortege stays together. i wouldn’t overtake on a sc, but see no problem on a dc as long as you don’t scream past in a cloud of exhaust smoke!

Can’t see a problem myself, came across one on the A303 a few weeks back, all the cars were slamming on their brakes and pulling in behind the cortege which was doing about 40mph, kinda like they do when theres a HA traffic vehicle on the motorway :unamused: I just pulled out and passed them all :stuck_out_tongue:

Apparently there are 107 deaths per minute and probably as many births. I go to a christening about once every 5 years, so it follows that I don’t really worry about anyone I don’t know.

My brother died in 2007, my 94 year old Auntie last week, the rest I don’t really care about.

As already mentioned, the one in the box doesn’t care.

Good to hear I shaln’t be cursed then  Without being disrespectful, I’m dreading when Raf Brize Norton takes over the repatriation from Raf Lyneham in September. Our local councils want the corteges to the JR Hospital to pass the best routes for people to line the streets. That means Carterton, the A40 from Minster Lovell to Oxford (Marston Flyover) will be a nightmare to drive along and if it’s a Friday afternoon forget it. Someone was recently blasted in local press for sensibly suggesting doing them at weekends so more can line the route and less disruption for everyone else. Also, they have police escorts so you’ve no chance of passing them whatsoever. At least when they came up the A420 I always dodged them and came up the A361 from Highworth and to date I’ve never seen one except for on tv or in the papers.

most of the cars following are told at the begginging to have headlights on so lead car can keep a check on how many are following behind and not to loose any at turnings or roundabouts…I will over take on DC but not fast just a few mph over there speed so as not to rock them as i go past…SC I just park in next lay by for a few mins have a drink or a bite to eat by the time you then get moving they have gone

3 points and £60 if plod catches you overtaking one :exclamation:

but dont get me started on the funeral convoys that try and get onto the A14/M11 at 12mph heading to the crem just outside Cambridge on the A14 E/B, very suprised they havent yet caused an accident as seen some smokin tyres before now :exclamation: sometimes though they see sence and at least use the bus lane :exclamation: :exclamation: :exclamation: :exclamation: :exclamation: :exclamation:

but if trucks are parked up on it as the lay by is full i have seen them ‘chicane’ between the inside lane and the bus lane/lay by weaving in and out of the parked up trucks :exclamation: :open_mouth:

Was laughing at something funny on the radio when a hearse and car full of mourners pulled up beside me. Turned my head to the right whilst still laughing to be greeted with grim scowls. ZB overtaking them, I undertook them in my haste to get away

Muckaway:
What are your opinions on overtaking hearses? I know it’s not the thing to do on single carriageways but what about duals? Myself and 2 other lorries overtook one on the A40 Witney Bypass earlier and a couple of passengers in a car following invited us for Nescafe as we passed. I’ve always passed hearses on dual carriageways as I don’t see the point tagging along behind them-this one wasn’t even hittting 40mph so sod following that on a sc all the way to Oxford (I take it it was going to the crem’ as there were no flowers).

[zb] em. Their issue not yours. When I’m in my box I wouldn’t want everyone stacked up behind my car like a load of lemons with some faux ‘respect’ thing going on, and I reckon truth be known neither would most other folks. I get them all the time where I am as my gaff is not far from a cemetry on a 40 d/c and I’m always the rebel cruising past them whilst everyone else sits behind them like a bunch of clowns.

I await the frothing to start…

I think as long as you take it easy and don’t go hammering past, that’s good enough.

Since when■■?

Wouldnt overtake one in case i ended up in a dead end

In all honesty, and out of respect i always say to myself “god bless ya” but i dont overtake for a while, always wait and see if they turn off first.

In holland when my son in law died, and we attended the funeral…the Pall Bearer asked who had cars…and then duly handed out black flags for everyone to put in their windows ( like the england flag system )
then everyone knew who was with the cortege…and they all respected it…so should adopt the same system here…maybe they should have a sign “Body on board”…like the ones that say “baby on board”
