Overspeed warning annoying

Does anyone else find that the overspeed warning is really ■■■■■■■ annoying and distracting? Before all the haters jump in with comments such as “thick [zb]! Keep it under x mph and it won’t happen!” I personally don’t see the problem with letting the truck overrun to 58mph (for example) where the auto retarder will kick in and hold the speed, but even though you never exceed 60 you still get the stupid overspeed warning  . When it starts flashing you can’t clear it until it’s flashed through about 4 or 5 cycles, so you’ve got to contend with that flashing in your face before you can do anything about it which is really annoying, especially at night. Then you have to take your eyes off the road for several seconds while you fumble about trying to find and press the OK button. If the powers that be insist on having it then it should only activate above 60 mph and only flash once and be cleared on the first press of the button.

I really can’t get excited about this. Any mention of it “flashing in your face” is really making multiple mountains out of a very small molehill.

+1 I don’t clear it anyhow. Just clear it at end of day or when I need to fiddle with tacho.

In the Iveco’s it also flashes in your face on the dash display as well. I defy you to continue driving without eventually getting ■■■■■■ off with it and ‘rectifying’ it.

On mine (VDO unit in a Volvo) as soon as it starts flashing hit OK, flashing stops, hit OK again and this removes overspeed warning from display screen.
This has been the case on any VDO unit I’ve used, maybe different on other makes or newer units?

Flashes up on dash on my lorry too, I just ignore it and it stops once back down to cruise speed.

yeah its a nuicance coming on when going downhill about 65 mph
i often nearly crash pressing ok to get rid of it

I have noticed the same when being under the 60 mph limit on motorways it flashes up like a whorehouse sign.If a copper was passing he could see the flashing and give you a tug.

A very good question, I will put it in my pile of non important questions to think about,

On some of our units restricted to 83kph it starts flashing if you go over 85 - 86kph… annoying!

You’re using the correct procedure for Professional Drivers :

OK Once to Acknowledge.

OK Twice to Clear.

Unprofessional Drivers should have a Deadman’s Brake.

Yeah same thing here, that’s why it’s ■■■■■■■ annoying because no law is being broken.

I agree, pointless, is a complete distraction from the road ahead.

In the Man it flashes over speed if you touch 90kmph/56mph or over for 1 minute, then you have to clear it, so I play the minute game & let it run for about 45 seconds at 58/59mph then bring the speed down to 89kmph/55mph, then let it go again.

Some hills it regularly does it on are ‘Overspeed Hill’ northbound M1 just past J22/Coalville, & then the next hill running down to J23. Also running down to J15/M6 is a good one (I reckon if you just let it go, you could reach 65/70 on that one :unamused: )

Some hills you just can’t get it to overspeed, especially if your light. Bit annoying that, especially when you’ve just spent 5 miles getting past a Tesco’s Slow Coach & he flies past you on a steep descent.

Not sure if I’m correct in thinking that VOSA might be interested in having a word if they find a lot of ‘Over Speeds’ on the TACO.

someone told me-if you go into the settings on the ‘Puter’ you can change the speed setting for when the over speed light comes on. (I might try it tomorrow, set it for 95kmph ?)

Does my head in that the speedo only goes upto 70mph, I wanna know my actual top speed so I have something to beat next time

Annoys me too, Stoneridge warn you before the over speed so you can do something about it, VDO doesn’t so I let it go, flash blah blah blah then it stops & I don’t have to press anything until I want to change modes, no matter how many over speeds I do… Apparently with DHL it’s 3 strikes & you’re in the office for it, any truth in this?

How times change!

Pre limiter most lorries would cruise at 65mph, the Old Bill wouldn’t bat an eyelid, if you were jogging on a bit more than that they would usually just pass you and the one in the passenger seat would hold up 6 fingers (only one hand needed on the southern section of the M5!) to tell you to slow down a bit.

You had to be driving like a ■■■■ to get nicked for speeding most of the time. Of course there were areas/coppers with lrss lenience, but for the most part, you were left alone.

Now you get overspeed warnings for going slower than the legal speed limit ffs, madness…
