You’re splashing a lot on tractor units, but when are you going to replace the trailers? Some of them look pretty shabby when out and about.
It probably doesn’t help them that they are hooked up to shiny cabs.

Shabby really ■■? Thought they look ok tbh… Backs bumpers are beat up on some of them (bays in Rungis meat market) , the new design is a narrower bumper.
They are all 2008 / 2009 / 2010 Chereau meat railers…
We want to get 7 years out of them. We have 25 of them that are all paid for. Don’t want to replace them yet. They are well maintained by Carrier to try and prevent engine problems)
May be getting 5 new Euro Railers at the end of the year…

Don’t get chereau euro railers if you can help it. Because of the way they are built now ( modular ) if you shunt beef ( unavoidable ) the fronts pop out. G&a design is much better.
Well, you don’t want your front popping out when you shunt the beef do you?
Sacre bleu!!!

I think its the livery he means? You’ve got some of the most impressive units out there but the trailers look very ordinary.

Had quotes from both G&A and Chereau… Not a lot in it tbh - Wont get much change out of £54k a piece
Chereau + Carrier… Best combination In my opinion (for what It’s worth )…

That is what we have got.
(apart from 3 Thermo Kings, we bought them last minute after someone cancelled the order)

Agreed. But the euro railers allow beef ( if that’s what your carrying ) to freely hit the bulkhead when “shunting up”. And although chereau won’t admit it they have a problem. I know of at least 3 uk hauliers that have had issues with them. The g&a trailers don’t seem to suffer the same problem. Although they have other issue , pallet carrier doors are crap, back doors don’t seal as well and rail locks are utter ■■■■■■ But you can live with all that. The front bulkhead popping off is a little bit harder to cope with.

Yeah LHD… Ray bought it back. The lad in the Burgandy 730 is in Denmark now…
I doubt Cherau would want to lose White’s as a customer so if there’s any shenanigans with the bulk head or the back doors getting smashed in by the meat swinging, i’m sure they’ll sort it out.

They are denying there is a problem despite being told there is by two uk hauliers and one hire company. The hire company have more clout than most !!
Our lot recently bought 50 new Krone fridges. They are developing “mysterious” cracks which the Krone rep is at a loss to explain as it’s not happening at any other companies.
Maybe it could have something to do with our shunters attempts to move the coldstore a few feet closer to the A1 using the method of docking at 30mph! Or perhaps when they hook up to a trailer on a bay and insist on immediately jacking the front skywards before moving away from the bay!
Presumably they just need to reinforce the front bulk heads more then? I presume you can’t stop the carcases impacting the front bulkhead under braking, probably isn’t an issue with lambs or even pigs but Aberdeen Angus might try and get in to the belt on your fridge?
Shunters can be a bit heavy handed, had empty roll cages coming through the front bulkheads on a few new montracon trailers as the shunters were just “squaring them up” which brought a tear to my eye.

All sorts of manufacturers have ‘‘never had that happen before’’ but the funny thing is that when you speak to other owners they have all had similar problems, soon as the dealers admit to a problem they know all its going to do is cost them money so they keep quiet and try to ride it out.

It’s the way they are built now which is the problem. And also why they are reluctant to admit the fault, because they have spent millions gearing up to build the trailers in the new way. The old way was to physically joint the front to the sides ( rough explanation ) the new way is a complete piece is made front & sides ( again very rough explanation ) and they simply aren’t strong enough. Yes stopping the load hitting the bulk head would work but its difficult for two reasons 1- the carcass then swings before hitting the front & comes off the hooks. 2- it limits load space. With proper loading it wouldn’t be a problem. But very few abattoirs load properly because they get more on by shunting. All in all far easier to buy another make.
