Other strings to your bow

Following on from Dozy’s comments about his previous experience in other jobs - What other skills do you have to fall back on / qualifications you can use in other jobs?
I remember working on the buses and there was a professor who drove buses purely because it was a less stressful way of life for him. I’m sure there’s plenty here who are highly qualified but for whatever reasons they don’t use what they’ve got.
I’ve got my PCV licence should I need a fall back as there always seems to be a demand for bus drivers and also have completed an engineering apprenticeship in toolmaking should something happen to my licence.
What about everyone else?

Time served fabricator welder.
Also worked for an on course turf accountant.

I passed my Class 1 at 21 in 1976 and haven’t done much else since although I did drive buses for First for 4 years around 1998. It’s a lot easier driving lorries. Before all that I worked in a pork shop cutting up meat and helping to make pies, sausage etc. Apart from my Class 1 and PCV I have no other qualifications. Plus I’ve only got 3 1/2 years to go so I’m not bothered about doing anything else

Flt driving if you can call that a skill to fall back on.

Butcher (may need a refresher course now)
Internet marketer / salesgeek
Odd job man
Some secret stuff I cant discuss.

Makes me realise how important me licence is. Wouldnt mind trying something new though perhaps a DVSA job or HATO.

Done a 4 year mechanical engineering tech aprenticeship for 4 yrs after leaving school completed in 78. I done it for a year and went driving (What a ■■■■ brilliant move that was :unamused:  )
Although on paper I’m qualified things have developed and changed so much from then, that I would be lost in a modern hi tech mech eng environment now, so my qualification is not worth the paper it is written on.

Plant operator. My boss has recently had me reassessed to renew my 360 and site dumper tickets. Will be redoing my backhoe loader ticket during the summer, combining it with some lorry loading course to make it suitable for dcpc hours.

PCV licence - always asking for drivers?? FOR A REASON! (Been there done that before HGV driving)

[ZB] wages for moving cargo that talks and that would claim compensation at the slightest bit of ‘bad’ driving… :unamused:

Charitable Donation Avoidance Specialist.

my one and only qualification is a CPC, so I could run a truck but as I don’t have a DCPC I couldn’t drive it . LOL
Been self employed since I was 18 so I couldn’t even get a proper reference. thank ■■■■ I don’t need a job at the moment.

The reason I never ventured into coaches or taxis - boxed beef is nice and quiet , dosen’t complain , dosen’t do a runner and dosen’t want to stop for a ■■■■ every 10 miles down the road .

I expect I could always go back into the SAS :stuck_out_tongue:

Have an operators CPC, although my knowledge is thinning the less I use it.

Was Master Scuba Diver Trainer in another life, and quite good at it too. But that was HARD work, you truck drivers don’t even know what moaning is.

Have been a landscaper so could quite easily fall back into that. But I wouldn’t want to work for anyone else, and I’m too lazy to do it on my own. But I do enjoy it still when I do the odd project.

I used to design and manufacture printed circuit boards. Been an external auditor for manufacturing visiting China, Philippines, Hong Kong etc. National and International CPC holder… Current job. Driver Trainer and Lgv DVSA instructor, Advanced driving instructor and all that goes with that. Looking to go back to what I enjoy… Driving artics. Will be there soon.

Always liked the idea of being a commercial diver despite only ever having dived once on holiday in Egypt. Some serious money in it.

HNC Business Admin & Information Management :unamused:
Scuba Instructor, :grimacing:
Enough Agricultural certificates to paper the house

There is less and less money in commercial diving. Rate cutting is not only prevalent in the haulage industry sadly.

As for dealing with boat loads of tourists like I did, that was proper work

100 metres crawl. Though I can’t find the certificate right now.

I know a guy who does all the big budget films. My dad worked with him when he was a sparky, they went to a house and he met my mom.

I worked in a shop for 10 months, and I’ve got a university diploma in biology. Side effect of starting driving at 19. Been doing it for about 13 months now. (Looking for something else, possibly do manager’s CPC)
