Is there anything in the regs about when flashing beacons should be used or is it up to the individual, see a lot of WS using them when they’re carrying steel or the Explore with the pre cast concrete sections, just wondered if there was a right or wrong time to use them
The right time is when something is causing a hazard, so they can warn other people to pay attention etc. I do find it strange and comical when you se a low loader, with a solitary 2 ton fork lift on the back, lit up like a wrecker

I know what you mean, I caught up with a low loader early hours of the morning on the A1 just before Baldock & the orange strobe lights were so bright I could hardly make out how wide it was, I approached with caution & to my amazement all it had on board was a small JCB, What a ■■■■■■■ idiot.
Dave…
AA vans towing cars make me laugh. What is abnormal about dragging a clapped out Micra?
I was shunting out of a site on a narrow Oxford street earlier; Beacons on no room for a car to pass while I’m manoeuvering yet they still bomb down the hill and look surprised when there’s nowhere to pass. Time to sit there and have a sandwich.
They’re compensating for the size of some thing else [emoji6]

Guilty as charged…

Were you the guy who took the roof off, or the guy who wrote the new roof off on the way back after being collected from Fords, or its final accident when the fork lift driver who drove off the loading dock & parked the fork lift in the cab, I used to call that Transit Lucky.

Haha none of the above. I was the one who got cut up by a typical rigid driver in Cambridge, then when he cleared out of the way, a vectra came round him and hit me head on. Late 2000 early 01. I worked there from 97-01. I started as Crossies drivers mate then progressed onto the van when JP became transport manager. I think between Crossie and me, we kept you and John busy most nights haha
They use them because it makes them feel important,95% of vehicles that have them on don’t need them to be on while driving on public roads…take note tipper drivers!
Sometimes i forget to switch mine off after i’ve come out of a quarry or site.If you’ve got the radio on you can’t hear the beacons whirring away on the roof which is the only tell tale sign they are on when your driving.
Makes me feel like a right knob when you get that helpful flash of the beacons from a fellow tipper as you pass each other.
Half the time its just laziness, banging a magnetic flashing light on a load of steel is easier than fastening a proper marker board on
Trouble with abusing them, it’s the same with hi-vis clothing and reversing beepers, too many in use and you no longer stand out, so the point is lost. There’s a building site near me, on and off all day long, beep-beep-beep from the forklift, surely the workers get so used to it they no longer notice?

Agreed.
Since the advent of daytime running lights and always on headlights on motorbikes, the amount people pulling or stepping out in front of you on a bike has increased vastly.
My favourites for beacons are slidebeds and beaver tails where the car or plant on the back is now just a load. What purpose do beacons fulfil there?
I move plant and access kit around all day and it’s very easy to eave them on by mistake as I only have roof mounts I usually turn them off in brum tunnels when u realise altho I do habe a rear beacon to put onto over hanging loads not that it will do much good as there at the back but Iv seen many my poets fall over tow ropes ect.

There a Facelift depot nearby and I regularly see a cherry picker 18t driving with full beacons on. Also Hydro Cleansing Trucks seem to like to show off the hundreds of strobes they have in their tankers. Not too sure how many gulleys they can ■■■■ driving down a motorway at 55.

I think Alan Cross & Fred Suddell are still down at Icelands, What happened to JP & the rest of the gang.
Dave…
The sprinter type car carriers (can’t call them recovery trucks) make me laugh they seem to be on permanently.
I have them on my recovery truck, use when loading at side of road for obvious reasons, off as soon as I’m in my cab, occasionally they’ll come back on if I’m down some dodgy country lanes, as they did yesterday, first time in months they’ve been on whilst driving, don’t see the point.
Construction use there is actually regulations on them .
No one pays attention to them at all now because you have every moron driving around with them on .
Motorways muppets things come from behind you what’s need for front lights,
Lot if morons with orange light syndrome you will no if come across me because I will be sure to inform you what a c**t you look.
