Didn’t think there could be two grease monkeys with the same name haha. I was the good looking young kid that totalled your blue transit
Were you the guy who took the roof off, or the guy who wrote the new roof off on the way back after being collected from Fords, or its final accident when the fork lift driver who drove off the loading dock & parked the fork lift in the cab, I used to call that Transit Lucky.
Dave.
Haha none of the above. I was the one who got cut up by a typical rigid driver in Cambridge, then when he cleared out of the way, a vectra came round him and hit me head on. Late 2000 early 01. I worked there from 97-01. I started as Crossies drivers mate then progressed onto the van when JP became transport manager. I think between Crossie and me, we kept you and John busy most nights haha
I think Alan Cross & Fred Suddell are still down at Icelands, What happened to JP & the rest of the gang.
Dave…
Yes Dave, Alan and Fred are still at Iceland with John, although Alan is already past retirement. He’s almost 67! JP stayed right up until Culina took over, then after a couple of years moved on. He’s now TM at Hoddesdon Distribution is Harlow. Steve Smith had to leave Culina when his light fingers got him into trouble once too often, Colin Orpin is on Lee Couriers, John Milburn is still driving for Culina at 66 years old, he must be mad, and nobody has ever heard of Tony Watson since he left after his bike crash.
Oh, and Mark Bunton is half way through a 17 stretch for smuggling

I’m terrible for remembering to turn them on at site arrival and off when I leave. They’re not high on my list of priorities.The traffic Marshall always says “you put your light on”. They’ve been abused so much no one takes notice of them anyway. I passed an artic on the M25 yesterday lit up like a Christmas tree.on the back was the ■■■■■■ Land Rover. Don’t.Just… Don’t
The old fashioned rotating beacons seem to be making a comeback; Weren’t they frowned on a few years ago? I was told on an EPIC course that they could trigger epileptic fits.
The 16 plate Daf i use at work has the rotating beacons.
I forget to switch mine off sometimes lol

AA vans towing cars make me laugh. What is abnormal about dragging a clapped out Micra?
I was once told by a recovery operator that if the broken down car is being towed either on a spec frame, A frame or just a bar, (ie some of the car wheels are still in contact with the road) then beacons have to be used. But if it’s fully loaded onto the recovery vehicle, then they should be switched off as soon as the recovery + load moves off.

And then there’s the AA who use beacons in a layby when “rescuing” a motorist. Is it rescuing when all they do is look under the bonnet and call a tow truck?

This is the advise most of the professional recovery associations give. I also think its in the C&U regs list which vehicles can use ambers:
(l)amber light from a warning beacon fitted to–
(i)a road clearance vehicle;
(ii)a vehicle constructed or adapted for the purpose of collecting refuse;
(iii)a breakdown vehicle;
(iv)a vehicle having a maximum speed not exceeding 25 mph or any trailer drawn by such a vehicle;
(v)a vehicle having an overall width (including any load) exceeding 2.9 m;
(vi)a vehicle used for the purposes of testing, maintaining, improving, cleansing or watering roads or for any purpose incidental to any such use;
(vii)a vehicle used for the purpose of inspecting, cleansing, maintaining, adjusting, renewing or installing any apparatus which is in, on, under or over a road, or for any purpose incidental to any such use;
(viii)a vehicle used for or in connection with any purpose for which it is authorised to be used on roads by an order under section 44 of the Act;
(ix)a vehicle used for ■■■■■■ purposes when travelling at a speed not exceeding 25 mph;
(x)a vehicle used by the Commissioners of Customs and Excise for the purpose of testing fuels;
(xi)a vehicle used for the purpose of surveying;
(xii)a vehicle used for the removal or immobilisation of vehicles in exercise of a statutory power or duty;

So tippers, BT, anglian water and every other Tom, Will and Harry shouldn’t be using them. But then do you expect to see PC plod pulling them all over and giving them tickets? Highly unlikely.
I think the question is when they should be used rather than who should be using them. I know my local binmen have a tendency to have them on even at 40 mph which I believe is illegal. They should only be on when they are actually collecting and not travelling between collection areas. They are supposed to warn motorists of a hazard and a motorist travelling at normal road speed is typically not a hazard
Having said that, this is Falkirk so the majority of motorists around become a hazard as soon as they start their engine!

I was shunting out of a site on a narrow Oxford street earlier; Beacons on no room for a car to pass while I’m manoeuvering yet they still bomb down the hill and look surprised when there’s nowhere to pass. Time to sit there and have a sandwich.
That’s because the towed vehicle is unbreaked
None of youse boys see any
“Agri-Tang” clowns on your travels??
That’s the Agri Contractors/Farmers who go into a field and mow/rake/chop or cart grass silage etc with two beacons flashing away as they tootle about round the bloody ground!!!
Maybe just a “Grassmen” NI thing!!![emoji28]
