You made a mistake a genuine one and the vermin of DVSA get you but the fine ok you pay like all other EU countries but what the hell are the 3 points about its just ridiculous they kick ye with a fine then stamp on ye with points , why the points it’s a simple mistake and you pay , or is it to just lay a bit of extra stress after the fine so you can drive around worrying about licence all the time ? I don’t think the points should be given , I suppose it’s just gives them that extra bit of pleasure giving them out , I think they get a kick of it , ■■■■■■ thing !!!

■■■■ those double deckers and their liabilities… No extra pay either.Would you accept less pay for a smaller trailer
Who’s talking about that?
At no stage was “less pay for small” or “more pay for big” mentioned.
I must have misread some of it then.
Getting points for this is just wrong! Maybe if you have done it more than once and they could record your details so they can see you have done it to maybe keep trying to save time? If it would save time? But first time when you make a simple mistake like that to give you points is just harsh! It’s not that clear when you are trying to join up there and it’s not helped by how busy it is and all the muppets trying to get around you any way they can! A fine maybe but defiantly not points on your first offence!
To be honest I thought £100 and 3 points was a bit harsh for a first offence but the restriction signs are there and I drove past them so I guess it’s a case of ‘if you can’t do the time, don’t do the crime’.
I would not have proceeded any further towards the tunnel with out without the intervention of DVSA, I was already looking for a way out before being stopped at the barrier.
To me the only drivers who are going to be caught out are those that like me have made a genuine mistake, can’t see how anyone would think that they could gain an advantage by purposely trying to fit a 4.88m high trailer through a 4.8m high tunnel.

Not being familiar with the new layout, what does it mean if you’re in the wrong lane? Do you have to get the police to reverse you out or something? I don’t understand why you got a fine and points.
This is how they deal with overweight trailers. Causes absolute chaos for everyone behind as even just a 2 minute delay there has huge implications.

If you add the right tunnel as a destination(or a waypoint) it will keep you off from the low tunnel. You can pinpoint it on your satnav, or add it as GPS coordinates. Like I did here:
it’s an absolute ***** trick to give out 3 points on the licence for a genuine mistake. The ***** dishing out this should be ashamed of themselves, but they won’t be,the ***** !

There’s a long thread of examples of drivers who have made the same “genuine mistake” of passing a height restriction sign.
Carryfast:
If I’ve read it right it’s an un marked exit from a junction into a slip road leading into an un avoidable height restriction with no way out after that junction
You haven’t read it right, as Micky said in his first post that he saw the height restriction signs.
MickyB666:
Approaching junction 1A I did see the height restriction signs but thought I would be able to filter across before entering the restriction!
MickyB666:
My own stupid fault!!!Bringing a double decked trailer back from Erith heading for the Darford Tunnel, I knew I had to travel through the East tunnel because I googled it before setting off, didn’t know I had to head in the opposite direction to junction 1B to double back on myself in order to get into the correct lane for the East tunnel. Approaching junction 1A I did see the height restriction signs but thought I would be able to filter across before entering the restriction!
Out of interest, what is the offence they are issuing the points on? Due care etc?
Might be worth going on to PePiPoo and just running the information through the knowledgable people on there. There may be something that makes the offence invalid.

The offence I committed was ‘failure to comply with a traffic sign’.

I have never heard of PePiPoo, I accept the fine and the points but will google them out of interest.

That’s a pleasant change, someone holding their hands up and saying “I’m just an ordinary human being, making occasional human errors”, and not trying to make out that someone else is to blame. If I’ve read it right it’s an un marked exit from a junction into a slip road leading into an un avoidable height restriction with no way out after that junction. At which point they’ll then hit the unfortunate driver with 3 points and a £100 fine. That isn’t a driver error and the Highways Authority certainly are to blame.
I’m pretty certain that there are signs on the way upto the roundabout, I load out off Viridor at Crayford regular, though I’m not higher than 14’6" so don’t really out a sign for 15’ +.
You’d see that GlenA9 has put a snap shot of the signs on the next post to yours
Did they measure your trailer or just give you ticket. If they didn’t i would appeal the ticket.
Am I the only person to find it slightly ironic that had the OP been following the directions of a TomTom truck satnav (and in doing so identifying himself as an amateur in the eyes of other drivers just as surely as if he’d been wearing a hi-viz and Bluetooth earpiece) he would have been directed along the “correct” route, doubling back via J1B then taking the RH tunnel at the crossing?
I wonder if the cheap Chinese satnavs favoured by some participants here would do the same…?

They did measured the trailer and I knew I was over height so I consider it to be ‘a fair cop gov’.
The trailer height was 4.88m, the tunnel height 4.8m - so I was 3.15 inches over height - So it cost me £100 for a little over 3 inches - Hmm I am sure ‘Dipperdave’ would be able to come up with a good few ■■■■■■ innuendo’s about that
There was a foreign driver being dealt with in front of me and I did think about sneaking around and lowering the suspension down whilst I was waiting.
I would also like to mention that the two DVSA officials in attendance where very fair and courteous and I have no complaints about the way they dealt with me, I even managed to share a joke or two with them.
Roymondo:
… and in doing so identifying himself as an amateur in the eyes of other drivers ?
I have only been driving a few months and still consider myself to be very much an ‘amateur’ and I would not try to pretend otherwise however I do not see any reason why I would need to disclose, hide or even mention this fact in relation to my OP!.. And I am pretty sure all drivers where amateurs to begin with unless they claim to have drove out of the womb tooting on the horns of a Scania whilst eating a Yorkie and singing convoy!
What is the offence code ?
Assuming it is a CU.

I was going by Winseer’s comments which seemed to contradict the OP.Going by Glen A9’s post that says no vehicles over 4.8 m at that junction exit.Although it’s easy to understand how anyone might confuse that with the usually expected warning not order sign in that situation.

Sorry I don’t know what a CU is but the offence as printed on the FPN is ‘Fail to comply with a traffic sign - RTA 1988 S36’, so the code is S36 I assume?
CU = construction and use , usually used for dodgy brakes/lights/mobile phone use etc.
