Onother question

can some one explain the double manning to me please doing a trip friday from south wales to leeds tip reload and back to wales i know i put 2 discs in analouge tacko if i stop after driver 1 has done 4.5 hrs can driver 2 take over
as we ll be starting at 3.am what happens to spread over time does driver 2 time start recording same as driver 1 sory to be ignorant but never 2 manned before so never really taken any notice.

Start 0600 both do different things till 0700 which is allowed for the first hour only - after that both drivers must stay together - exept when going to the loo or showering - I think that is allowed  :unamused:

Driver 1 does 4.5 hours driving 0700 to 1230 - driver 2 on break

Driver 2 does 4.5 hours driving 1230 to 1700 - driver 1 on break

Driver 1 does 4.5 hours driving 1700 to 2130 - driver 2 on break

Driver 2 does 4.5 hours driving 2130 to 0200 - driver 1 on break

Driver 1 does 1 hour driving 0200 to 0300 - driver 2 on break

Driver 2 does 1 hour driving 0300 to 0400 - driver 1 on break

Now got to 21 hours which is the maximum shift time as 9 hours of rest must be taken in a 30 hour period

Both drivers must now rest for a minimum 9 hours and have a bunk each to use - or people will talk :exclamation: :exclamation:

thanks rog mate sorry about spelling on 1st post .

ADD - remember to swap the tacho discs or cards over each time when changing drivers as only the card or disc in the no1 position records the driving.

Hi Rog

driver two would be on POA and the first 45 Min’s would count as a brake, also remember that the hours do depends on if you have not used your two 10 hours drives up
in that week

Whats the spread over on a 6 day week for double manning?? Me & the Bro In Law done 2 days before xmas and we done the above legally but we couldn’t imagine 20 hour days everyday… Is it the same as single manning that an increased break must be taken on 2 days?

IMO you can only do the max 21 hours driving twice a week you can not take a rest when the truck is moving so your rest must be as single driver the rest of the week

Driver not driving has the option - nothing to stop them putting tacho on break.

One thing - If any one of those breaks are 3 hours or over does that mean the 9 hours is not regarded as a reduced daily rest

Not with a digi-tacho ROG.
When the vehicle is moving, it automatically records POA on the card in slot 2.
VOSA have stated that they’ll take the first 45 minutes of that as break.

you can not take a rest in a moving vehicle
you can take a brake in a moving vehicle

for it to be a reduced daily rest of 3 hours the vehicle must not be moving

you can not put on brake when truck moving

It does say that DAILY REST (article 8 paragraph 8 of the regs) can be taken in the vehicle as long as it has suitable sleeping facilities and is stationary.

So does that infer that a 3 hour BREAK cannot be used as part of a reduced daily rest

I’m a lot out of my depth on this one…

ROG:
Where does it say in the regulations that the one not driving cannot take a BREAK in a moving vehicle

Rog
i never said you couldn’t take a brake in a moving vehicle Please read my post you will see that

you must remember that a brake is different from a rest

Back to topic -

So does that infer that a 3 hour BREAK cannot be used as part of a reduced daily rest  because the vehicle is not stationary

Or is there no such thing as a 3 + 9 non-reduced daily rest in double manning due to the extension to 30 hours

yes in the reg a a rest can not be taken in a moving vehicle

you may drive for the max hour only twice in a week so IMO you would be able to do 2 double man shifts in a week but the rest of the time you would both have to revert back to standard hours

as a driver you can only drive a max 56 in any one week as long as you only drove 34 hours the last week

as double manded eash driver most still stick to his or her regs if you get what i mean

Thanks - not an area to which I am very good on but you have explained it clearly.

I just could not find the regs about the three hour bit of break not being allowed to be used as rest - it’s probably there but inferred to rather than being in what I call said in plain English

Hi Rog

i think you men this

Alternatively, a driver can split a regular daily rest period into two periods. The first period must be at
least 3 hours of uninterrupted rest and can be taken at any time during the day. The second must be
at least 9 hours of uninterrupted rest, giving a total minimum rest of 12 hours

this is not posssible on a double maned as you can not take the rest while moving

Where a daily rest is taken, this may be taken in a vehicle, provided that it has suitable sleeping
facilities and is stationary.
To summarise, a driver who begins work at 06.00 on day 1 must, by 06.00 on day 2 at the latest,
have completed either:

  • a regular daily rest period of at least 11 hours; or
  • a split daily rest period of at least 12 hours; or
  • if entitled, a reduced daily rest period of at least 9 hours.
