on the rob

So. if you knew one of the boys in your firm were having away with a can or two of diesel a week would you tell your boss ■■

Definitely not tell the boss, but may tell the driver to get me 2 cans as well  its none of my business what another driver steals, so long as its not stealing from me.

Yes.

but, he is stealing from you

if you don’t get a bonus at christmas, why not?

oh yeah, the company has spent too much on diesel during the year

2 gallons per week, at current rates is over £13 per week, base that on an average of 48 working weeks per year, that is £624 lost by the company from the thieving scrote who is pinching the diesel

that is also £624 per year that he is better off than you, as he will not be paying for the fuel for his car

margins are tight enough in the industry as it is, without pricks like that making it harder

so, to answer the OP’s question, YES, i would report it

I wouldn’t steal diesel myself, I think in the haulage game it’s the ultimate sin.
I wouldn’t grass on him either, But i’d probably have a word in his ear. If i’ve found out, Then someone else would find out and that someone else might grass him up.

I agree it is stealing from you, I would send an anonymous letter/phone call explaining that someone is helping themselves to the derv, don’t name anyone, just let them know it’s happening, then it’s for them to catch them!

You need to be very careful with regards to fellow drivers & theft.

A lot of us will be trusted with moving high value or highly desirable products, do you not think that every time someone asks you to lose a few off the back, or even get involved in something more organised, that it might be your employer testing you?

You should do, because there are security companies who specialise in exactly this sort of thing !

IME, thieves tend to be sneaky bleeders & the best ones are the ones you’d least expect it from. If someones blatantly nicking diesel & they’ve allowed YOU to become aware of it then you have to consider whether or not YOU are the one whose honesty is being tested.

Agree you have to be carefull if you did tell the tea leaf you knew what he was up to and he did get caught and he said "well he knew about it " looks bad on you and you wasnt doing the pinching.

If there’s 1 doing it, who know there maybe other in the yard doing it too, which can soon add up to a significant loss.
Him stealing diesel today, may mean that tomorrow your on the dole because the boss can`t make enough profit to run the business and closes it down.
So ask yourself, if you had the choice …would you rather it be you on the dole without a job or him??

Would you call the police if someone was siphoning the companies diesel while you were on a night out? I can’t see anything to distinguish the two as any different. Theft is theft

Phil,

Having a word with him might be the start of a slippery slope…

He then knows that you know, but what if he’s later caught fair and square by the boss?

Will he wrongly think that you dobbed him in? What will he tell his mates about you in that situation?

:bulb: Where might that leave you as regards being trusted by the boss/the rest of the lads??

All I’m saying is that having a word with him might not be the best course of action.

Some good points. I’d risk assess the situation first.

As others have said, it could threaten your job if the fuel cost is to much for the firm to shoulder!
I would tell them but totally anonymously! That’s the only way! Plant the seed some how, maybe a letter or some such. They don’t have to know who who’s.

Some posters want to grow a pair and the rest of us need to pray they dont breed.

this goes on a lot we cut it down a lot by using UV dye in the fuel got a few people
then the rest one guy stopped bringing in his Audi A6 and sold it  and replaced it with a diff one
me I did not grass him up the new manager did
best part the manager filled up his van with derv and was found out him self as he forgot to turn on the CCTV

I work for a guy, who from time to time pays for my fuel as I live a long way from the yard. Why steal ?

I agree with you Dave but I also agree that the thief ought to be dropped in it. Somebody mentioned on here about Xmas bonus etc…he’s right. It affects everything.

It’s not just xmas bonus. I’m sure there was a member here who got made redundant because the firm he worked for went bust. Turned out quite a few were on the rob.

Not grass as such but set him/her up for a fall!!!
