On-site parking

So my mate gets a job shifting high-end cars around for a dealership group.

Cushy - but here’s the rub - they want to charge him 30 notes a month for on-site parking.

Got me thinking about seeing job ads popping up on here from time to time mentioning free parking and I always thought that it came from the same free tie mentality or cycle to work scheme waffle.

So am I wrong and free parking really is a bonus? Have the days of parking your car where your truck sits gone?

■■■■ that pesky driver shortage!

It’s like everything else in this job mate, the way they treat you,.the stuff they do…
They only do it because they’re allowed to and because they get away with it, if every driver said ‘‘■■■■ that’’ what would they do?
Answer …Let you park for free,.as they should (and as they know in their own minds they should be).

My Mrs is a nurse for NHS. Not only do they pay crap wages and no decent rises in the pipeline, she also has to pay for the privilege of parking in the staff car park at the hospital!!

■■■■ disgraceful, what happened to all the support and gratitude that was shown to nurses during all the Covid crap.

WPL (workplace parking levy) Every local authority has been told by the government to implement them to bring down emission levels in their districts.
Scotland has just been given the go-ahead to implement them there fleetnews.co.uk/news/car-in … n-scotland

BOJO ain’t spending £2billion on walking, cycling & wheeling routes for the Hoi Polloi to use instead of cars for nowt. airqualitynews.com/2022/07/11/s … ing-in-uk/

My mrs works for the nhs & earns what I do for doing 8 hrs per day , she was recently off with shingles & got sick pay from day 1, when I was off i got £57 & £70 ish pounds , looking at her pension ( she could of took it at 55) she won’t have to worry when she retires , my daughter is a nurse & her pay looks comparable to mine & she does 36 hrs ( 3 days / nights most weeks , odd 48 hrs other weeks (!she is in a high band though )
Sister ( nurse ) retired at 55 and in her words enjoys the good life now
Nb I do believe it’s a bit of a joke but my daughter does bank shifts at £££££££ at her hospital , crazy really , you’d think they’d just put her in for some o/t
As for parking my daughter cannot even get a permit, she parked outside boyfriends mums & walks the 20 mins to work , wife has 2 permits for her / my car so she does pay for parking at work , but then it costs me nothing when I’m at Boston / Lincoln etc hospital

And on a previous thread it was asked are Unions worth it !!!

Ironically the unions are on board with the cycle or walk to work crusade.

[zb] disgraceful, what happened to all the support and gratitude that was shown to nurses during all the Covid crap.

But the nursing unions support the anti car use agenda like all the rest of them. They want us all to cycle or walk or get the bus
If people want to keep the freedom to use their cars now is the time to say so.

The sheep all bashed pots one day a week, what more do you want for our medical professionals?

To the OP, what are the company going to do if your mate says “nah I’m not paying it.” You say they WANT to charge him, not that it’s in the contract. If it was me I would be saying the car is parked for free or I’m not here.

Nottingham is the WPL capital of England with yearly WPL rates now approaching £500/year if the employer has 11 or more liable parking spaces. :open_mouth: nottinghamcity.gov.uk/wpl

So does mine

Ken.

Nothing wrong with paying for parking, in a yard or a hospital. It’s just another t&C that you weigh up when considering all the different job offers you have.

The trouble is (Depending on which side of the fence you’re on) is these reductions in private car use & limiting emissions to the levels agreed by the UK environmental bill are legally set in stone. They said from the start that the de-carbonisation of UK transport that it will be a bigger disruption than the industrial revolution was the first time around. :open_mouth:
Speaking of UK transport decarbonising the HGVzero task force to accelerate the HGV de-carbonisation has already begun with Eddie Stobart, Coca cola, XPO logistics, Tesco & DPD Logistics!!! :open_mouth: commercialfleet.org/news/tr … onise-hgvs

Thanks very much for your replies - I must admit I knew nothing about WPL.

After I started the thread I remembered the big corporate hubs that I used to deliver new units to back along - and wondered where all the drivers parked - do they have provided carparks and do they now charge (WPL)?

And as many of the haulage yards are not on bus routes or don’t operate in the early hours are drivers supposed to get on their tredders and cycle in getting a nice soaking before starting work. :frowning:

Because he’s Carryfast - the man who knows everything without having any experience of anything. In fact I think your description in another thread was something along the lines of “high on theory, zero on practical”

Having done year-round cycle commuting (distances ranging from 4 to 15 miles each way) at literally all hours of the night and day I can assure you the occasions you get soaked are really quite few and far between even here in UK. The one thing you do need though is practical facilities at the workplace (shower, lockers and changing room as a minimum). It’s only the absence of those facilities that stops me doing it now.

That absence is one of the unforeseen consequences of companies outsourcing their “own account” transport operations. The place where I work has the facilities mentioned - but only for their own, directly employed staff…
