On-site parking

Thanks very much for your replies - I must admit I knew nothing about WPL.

After I started the thread I remembered the big corporate hubs that I used to deliver new units to back along - and wondered where all the drivers parked - do they have provided carparks and do they now charge (WPL)?

And as many of the haulage yards are not on bus routes or don’t operate in the early hours are drivers supposed to get on their tredders and cycle in getting a nice soaking before starting work. :frowning:

Having done year-round cycle commuting (distances ranging from 4 to 15 miles each way) at literally all hours of the night and day I can assure you the occasions you get soaked are really quite few and far between even here in UK. The one thing you do need though is practical facilities at the workplace (shower, lockers and changing room as a minimum). It’s only the absence of those facilities that stops me doing it now.

That absence is one of the unforeseen consequences of companies outsourcing their “own account” transport operations. The place where I work has the facilities mentioned - but only for their own, directly employed staff…

I cycled & used a Suzuki ay50 katana scooter for years , and it definitely rained in Grantham more than not , scooter wasn’t to bad as you obviously had helmet / gear & it was a lot quicker getting home , but push bike I was often soaked when I got home , not so much going as I’d take the car if it was raining as mrs finished 4 pm & I didn’t start until 5.30 pm , back by midnight for mrs to have car for 8am

And on a previous thread it was asked are Unions worth it !!!

Ironically the unions are on board with the cycle or walk to work crusade.

My daughter , nurse & city hospital notts can’t even get a permit to park at the hospital never mind pay to park , she has to drive to the boyfriends mum , park there & then walk to work .20 mins
She went to the union as in winter when it’s pitch black / ■■■■■■■ with rain it not good safety wise for a young lass to be walking the streets to get to her car ( her boss wasn’t happy )
The unions answer was she could park at the hospital , just pay the full rate for parking, not even the reduced rate permit holders get , not even we will look into it , not even on the grounds of safety
, strange thing is the union reps all have parking permits , strange that
I’m not convinced they give a ■■■■ about parking / cycling , but going by my girls experience it’s more a case of I’m alright jack , ■■■■ you

You know this or have evidence how?

You have evidence to prove me wrong where ?.
As opposed to the UNISON crusade ‘‘Greening the Workplace’’ for one example and plenty of supporting evidence uttered by the TUC.
Good luck with finding any pro car use sympathies among the closet commies who’ve hijacked the union movement.

So make it a matter of choice. Those who want to go back to the 1930’s to save the planet can do so.
Those who don’t believe it can vote with their cars.

No he’s wrong , my mrs who’s worked in the nhs for 40 yrs said if there’s a issue the union reps are off with stress , not available , don’t answer the phone , so they obviously ( other than sorting out there own parking permits ) would not be involved in parking , or anything come to that , money for old rope

My mrs says they haven’t paid parking since covid started ( roughly 3 yrs is it ) , though she’s having issues with seeing pay slip so maybe paying it now , last she saw it was roughly £25 pm
£6 pw which is easily covered as my car is on her permit & im always at hospitals so my free parking easily covers £6
Daughter said her hospital is free at times , think weekend , nights , just days she can’t park as no permit , then when dark at 5 winter it’s not good walking back streets at night
When she helps out as queens ( bank shifts / or there short staffed ) she parks at boyfriends then gets a taxi there & back as obviously no permit & cost a bomb to pay for normal public parking for 12 hrs , you think they’d get free parking when helping out at another
These are issues the unions should be sorting !!!

My Mrs is a nurse for NHS. Not only do they pay crap wages and no decent rises in the pipeline, she also has to pay for the privilege of parking in the staff car park at the hospital!!

My mrs works for the nhs & earns what I do for doing 8 hrs per day , she was recently off with shingles & got sick pay from day 1, when I was off i got £57 & £70 ish pounds , looking at her pension ( she could of took it at 55) she won’t have to worry when she retires , my daughter is a nurse & her pay looks comparable to mine & she does 36 hrs ( 3 days / nights most weeks , odd 48 hrs other weeks (!she is in a high band though )
Sister ( nurse ) retired at 55 and in her words enjoys the good life now
Nb I do believe it’s a bit of a joke but my daughter does bank shifts at £££££££ at her hospital , crazy really , you’d think they’d just put her in for some o/t
As for parking my daughter cannot even get a permit, she parked outside boyfriends mums & walks the 20 mins to work , wife has 2 permits for her / my car so she does pay for parking at work , but then it costs me nothing when I’m at Boston / Lincoln etc hospital

My wife worked for the NHS as a Nursery Nurse in a Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) for 30 years until she retired at 52 due to ill health on a full pension. She worked a 38½-hour week in five shifts and was paid a better hourly rate than me at the time.

The NHS may not pay top rates, but they have one of the best employment packages going.

No he’s wrong

So are you saying that UNISON has issued a statement anywhere that it opposes and not supports the Green Party on the issue ?.If so feel free to post it.
