Harry, are you sure it was Perth that J&E trunked to, I know they were bought out by Phillip Ridgeway from Dundee.
I knew one or two of the drivers on trunk and they changed over somewhere up the road. They did run artics.

One web site about J & E says that in the 1960’s they had 60 lorries, 40 based at Helmshore and the rest (would that be 20) based at Dundee.
Big posh apartments and houses now at Helmshore where J&E’s yard was.

hiya,
Just having a quiet spell Larry, have been doing my Florence Nightingale bit, my good lady has been under the weather, I’ve been looking in and don’t think I’ve missed anything but like your good self have been “wondering where’s our Dennis”■■ hope all is well and he is suffering nothing more than having to put up with his good lady either on holiday in foreign climes or making for foreign climes on board a cruise ship,I’ll have to make do with Whitley Bay on board the bus compliments of the bus pass, woman lead me to the winkle stall I’m hungry.

hiya,
In the late 50s when I did my bit for John and Edna they certainly didn’t have artics I was the only driver at that time who could drive them having taught myself at Fearings of Burnley, they trunked to Glasgow, Perth, and Dundee it was through trunking in those times up one night down the next the Dundee depot was a purpose built building like the Helmshore depot the Dundee end was run by father and son Ridgeway I knew Phil quite well, nice to see they did get into artiics eventually I suppose they had to, I think the Glasgow and the Perth operations was operated by carrier.

On of Fearings drivers came to Gilbraith Tankers, he told me he had enough tea in his cellar to last him a life time, know what I mean Harry.
I can’t remember his name now but he had a little pickup truck with coach built wooden sides.

hiya,
Russell It was 1957 when I did my first stint for Fearings nearly always Hygrade Cartons out and whatever you could get back the tea was mainly trunked from London on an Octopus and drag and shunted into the Co-oP at Manchester after we’d all had our twopennorth, I don’t recollect the guy you are talking about but fair play it was a few baking days back, hows the good lady getting on Russell ■■ hope she’s feeling better.

Good lady came home from hospital today Harry, it was another blue light and horns trip last Sunday. Heart nearly called it a day but the brave men and women pulled her through again.
It is back to Wythenshawe again next Monday with her, I am doing more miles on the motorways nowadays than I did when I was earning a living on them.
Harry, do you remember Pendle Haulage, a relation of mine, Norman Jowett, bought them out and we can’t find any photos of them. I have a few of Jowetts.
Jowett once asked me to do a trunk for him, about 1964. I went Todmorden to London on nights and the foreman down there told me the shunter hadn’t turned up. I didn’t know London so he sent his wife with me to show me the way round the drops and pick ups. I returned to Todmorden the night after, no sleep, and Jowett gave me a fiver. Relation or not I told him never to ask me to help him out again. It seems it happened quite often.

Russell.
