Its a totally different military now to the days of National Service. The youngsters that want to work would be OK.The dossers and useless herberts would be no use in a modern Army. They need young people to learn skills with a lot of different kit to years ago.
Cheers Dave.

The waste of space yoofs could be used for mine clearance work they do not near any training just let them walk 100 yards or so in front of the soldiers when out on patrol and they would then be contributing some thing to society while doing something worth while. :unamused:
cheers Johnnie

i missed ns by about 18 months , but wanted to join up at 18 , one of my mates had just gone in the raf and said it was ok . sadly my old man passed away just after i turned 17 so i never got to do it . thats life ! cheers , dave

I joined the RAF in Jan 1960 at 17 and a half, signed on for five years then another three. National Service deferements were still going in,having finished their apprenticeships. There were some cocky and hard men at basic training for a start but they weren’t so bloody cocky and hard when they finished it after 12 weeks at Bridgnorth. If you didn’t do as your were told - told -not asked then you were in the crap and could jeopardise the rest of the flight, for example being backflighted, meaning another four weeks of squarebashing,so you all had to work together and try and be the best.
It didn’t do me any harm,at 17 I was a bit of a tearaway but the RAF taught me discipline.

Mind you,it didn’t stop me fiddling log sheets/books when I came out in 1968.

hiya,
I was exempt from NS initially because I was an underground worker in a local coalmine but I chucked that at 18 and was quickly called up the only way I could have stayed in civvy street was to dart back to the pit but I wanted to do it and spent most of my two years in the Far East and Ang the NS men did exactly the same job as the regulars and many of the young fella’s reached a quite high rank because they could do the job, myself and by choice would have remained a private soldier even if I’d signed on for 22 years, I was dual traded my title was driver/operator and if I’d accepted promotion would have been able to teach drivers (perish the thought) or even teach radio skills but there was no flies on me I was happy to just soldier on and do my time, it took a while to settle back into civvy street on demob and had to return to the pit because I was too young to drive heavies away from the forces and often regretted not doing the three years minimum regular stint that would have took me up to 21 and I’d have had a fatter pay packet, ah too late now in the words of the song " regrets I’ve had a few".
thanks harry long retired.

A chap from this area who would be a couple of years older than you Harry joined the Army.He signed on for three years and went as a driver.I asked him why he didn’t wait to be called up.He said if you signed up as a regular you could choose what you went in.So he did it his way and drove all sorts of vehicles when he came out.Mainly lorries but also road rollers and tracked machines.
Cheers Dave.

hiya,
Dave rollers and traxi’s looks like he was in the Royal Engineer’s I was “a long range sniper” or in the Royal Artillery I had a driving licence before I joined up so I didn’t need much training in that direction didn’t learn much about big guns other than how to drag them about and position them when I got them there usually having an AEC Matador as the tractive power, loved my two years and wouldn’t have missed it for the world, although I never got a leave or got home for most of that time, got a long weekend after basic training at Oswestry and a couple of weeks after trade training at Kinmell Park near Rhyl then straight on a troopship and next stop Korea and when that stopped finished my time off in Malaya, all that travel and it never cost me a penny, in fact got paid for doing it can’t be bad eh.

HI!
I’m 62,5 year more wise, practised calmer than when I was 20 year and can get my pension from 63,64,65. 65 is law but if I work longer say to 68 my pension wage grow much so in reality continue work after 65 is a good affair.

Yes, that´s right. I did learn when I was 9 year I never should ask a lady her age and I have never found it common peoples as for peoples age. It isn’t necessary.

How is the middle-age on this forum? 42?

Dave I have just gone back to page 30 and very few are under 60 and 2 or 3 in their 70s are nearer 80 than 70   so average age could be around 66 or 67  I do not need a tin hat as I happen to have a very thick well almost solid skull
cheers Johnnie

Well I am defiantly under 60 but not saying by how much

Hope you got plenty of grub in your house Chris, cos them old steam packet boats won’t be running much in the bad weather :frowning:

I guess the younger members is on Facebook and Twitter but I refuse play with this media. My wife will not have to struggle with these social mediums if I tomorrow will fall to the floor dead. She is no expert of PC’s. She mostly are watching News and play cards.

Ferry just departed Douglas for Heysham, didn’t sail for last two trips and won’t sail tomorrow.Normally she sails in all weathers but has a u/s bow thruster which makes her a handful to turn round in windy conditions. She’s booked in to have a new one fitted in dry dock Birkenhead on 16th December. You can hear the old Manx buggers over here saying that the old ships sailed in all weathers but there wasn’t the H and S shi*e in those days.
Just found this on the shipping forum…

Tesco and M and S run out very quickly as they don’t have warehouses, not like Shoprite and Co-op. I’ve been told that there were 35 Tossco trailers waiting at Heysham earlier this week.I did the shopping this morning and all the shelves were full at Shoprite but it was busy, appen a bit of panic buying. All bollo**s.

Don’t panic Chris,I’m just about to launch and we’ll be off on’t late tide mate !! I’ve had a hell of job getting a crew to-gether this 'after I’ll tell you, the’er all “■■■■■■ up” in Smokies at the moment, but when I turn’t bow int’t wind round bottom end of Walney and shout “PULL you ■■■■■■■” that’ll blow’t cobwebs out of 'em !! Now this cargo,I’ve had a bit of ajob getting it together but I hope the manifest will be to your liking !! 5 X Barrels of Stones’s Bitter, one jar of Pickled eggs, two trays of Balm cakes,a side of Bacon and a dozen boxes of Yorkshire tea and 5 doz eggs !! There might only be 3 barrels of Stone’s on board when we get there but we’ll have beaten’t Steam Racket no danger !! Cheers Dennis.

Lars met a few Swedish drivers in my time on the middle east, when in Turkey at Londra Camping they certainly liked beer.Tuborg, I asked why they drank so much,    They answered because it is so cheap here and so dear in Sweden! :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:
