You will have to go down to the nearest pond and see if you can catch a Walrus dave, the same as those Eskimo’s on David Attenborough’s program. You and your missus could survive a few months on one of those .
Cheers Dave.

you wouldn’t need to run out of the way of hillhead lorries chris , you could walk faster than they could go up froggat . they had to creep down the other side in bottom gear , the brakes were useless , dave
I remember when I worked at the Grouse when it was a farm and a pub I would wait for one of Hillhead’s and hang on t’back getting a drag up Froggatt Edge, letting go outside the pub, choked to death with fumes mind you.
i’ll bet that was edgar fletcher pulled you up froggat chris . he was close to retiring in 1960and drove a 1942 dg foden . his regular work was one a day to castleford glassworks , and he got paid 14 hours for it . i’ll bet it took him 90minutes from hillhead to the top of froggat . you would have been quicker to pull him .

The years would be 1954-55 Dave,I think Derbyshire Stone were going then, could be wrong, but Ben Bennets and Hughes Brothers I do remember well at the time.
You wouldn’t be able to hang on the back of the buggers now, they romp up there like they were empty.
14 hours for a Buxton-Castleford,them were t’days.
that sounds about right chris , old edgar did that run for donkey’s years , i think he had that wagon from new . if he spotted you hanging on , he would have pulled the cold start to make a bit more smoke . he was a rogue , he showed me my first "very naughty lady photo " when i started in the garage , cheers , dave

You was corrupted late in life by the sounds of it Dave, you must have gone to grammar school
.
Cheeers Dave.
aye , guilty as charged dave . my parents wanted me to go to grammar school , but it was a waste of time , they couldn’t have afforded to pay for university , and anyway all i wanted to do was drive lorries . working in the garage was the first step on the road , and as the fitters always complained " you get paid more to bend 'em than to mend 'em " cheers , dave

I thought you must have Dave.Even in deepest Radnorshire we saw naughty books in the playground at secondary modern schools .
Cheers Dave.
just think dave , if i had worked harder at school i would be enjoying my super pension now and watching the peasants struggling . i never bothered about picture books too much , i was too busy finding out about the real thing . cheers, dave
Now the cold snap has reached the parts other cold snaps havent previously reached , the excuse for a dram of Whisky is now harder to resist. In fact , ANY alcohol is a good body warmer. This poem used to be above the bar at my Dad
s local many years ago.
There are many good reasons for drinking,
And one of them s just entered my head, If a fellow can
t drink when hes living, How the HELL can he drink when he
s DEAD !
Cheers , cattle wagon man.
hiya,
I never put many shifts in when going to school , I just didn’t like it and used to do a bit on a local farm instead I did make a few bob doing that got nowt for attending school , i did quite well in the forces education stakes though attaining 3rd class which doesn’t sound much but wasn’t bad when doing it in your own time and I was only a national serviceman at least I left knowing how to read and write, I used to sign with a cross when I first joined up but it didn’t matter there was very little paperwork as an army driver if you could master the grease gun you was home and dry, oh and salute for your three quid a week, luckily or unluckily most of my postings were beyond civilisation so had a job spending the pittance anyway.
thanks harry long retired.
Aye good lod NS should bring it back would sort these nippers oot nee bother
you’re right there ange , instill a bit of disipline and self control in the yoof of today , it could solve a lot of the problems of society . they sit playing war games on the x box or whatever , and think if they get killed they just have to click a button and start again . ns might bring a bit of reality into their lives , cheers , dave
I totally agree with all of you.Although I didn’t do National Service as it ended about five years before I was 18. I think it would be a good thing to bring it back.It would give the young people a sense of purpose and direction in life. I can’t see it happening though,as they are making big cuts in the armed forces.
Cheers Dave.
Well lads my wife gave me the Daily Mirror she had got by walking up to the shop, how was the weather darling, she replied it is alittle cooler but bright and sunny.
I saw the front page Snow hits Britain, I think where, and it mentioned Durham so at once I thought of poor old Harry pouring anti freeze down his throat to stop himself from freezing to death!
I think it’s called " Glen Fiddler" or something in that vein.
So now because of the tropical weather we get in Northampton I am almost tempted to start a travel agent to provide comfort to you frozen wretches,

I think you will need plenty of newspapers to wrap up in Norm by the end of the week.Looks as if the rest of the UK will get some snow later this week.So get stocked up with a few gallons of soup.Leave the whisky to the Northern gang
.
Cheers Dave.
Not had any snow here yet pleased to say although my son does live in Edinburgh & they have had some
He was supposed to do this justgiving.com/o2gurubikecha … me_oneline tomorrow but due to weather it has been cancelled he may well be toping up his whisky though
NS finished before I was born I believe
My dad didin do NS as he joined as a regular instead
But still think they should bring it back ( if a uni can defer till you finish like you could yr ago if you had an apprenticeship )
would certainly put some decipline into some of them but as we all know that NS had different jobs to the regulars
i missed ns by about 18 months , but wanted to join up at 18 , one of my mates had just gone in the raf and said it was ok . sadly my old man passed away just after i turned 17 so i never got to do it . thats life ! cheers , dave
