Remember it well Norm it sure did stand out, but where it was
I haven’t a clue as I said have seen it and at one time being a
regular user of The Great North Road I’ve passed the place lots
of times but never been in so can’t say what the beers like.I’ll
bet there’s someone on here who knows exactly where it is.
thanks harry, long retired.

Norman Ingram:
Now I wonder if you lads remember that pub on the A1 it was done up like a austrian or swiss chalet the lager they served was vile, and weak as winkle ■■■■.
Was it a few miles north of Wetherby,I seem to recall summat like it although never had time to stop, not like BRS and Copenhagen Transport.
just past the racecourse , long sweeping right hand bend , it was on the southbound side . like you chris no time to stop and couldn’t afford it anyway , not being a well paid southerner .
toshboy:
Hi Harry, Yes that TIGER was potent stuff . like you -travelling around away from camp (no naafi) we had to buy it ( amongst other desirables) in the kampong cafes -it was more expensive and stronger still .it got many a squaddie into trouble though i will admit you northerners could handle it better than us southerners ! toshboy
Seen some of that “Tiger” in Tesco in Gillingham this week

I think I know now Dave,I was thinking of the Wetherby Inn or summat. No chance of stopping there,I were always skint and could have done with some of that London “Weighting Allowance” that our Barking drivers got.WTF was that for,Barking/Dagenham area was worse than parts of Sheffield and us dee-dahs didn’t get it.It’s like Manchester drivers getting it and Buxton drivers not getting it,made no sense to me,just had to make it up on dodgy nights out.

hiya,
Yes Ang it’s been available over here for a few years I bought a couple of bottles
from an “offy” in Durham a while back but I’m afraid at an exhorbitant price and
it was at reduced strength, they must water it down for their export market cos
I could still walk after I’d supped it even after I’d mixed it with a couple of malts
for a booster.
thanks harry, long retired.
Harry you are a wise man to just stick withh the Malts, Ive had a few tonight as Im feeling a bit Iffey, but there again I might just have a fancy for a few more Malts, just to keep me calm , so Im able to open my next bottle of Glenmorangie, Hope you are keeping well, Regards Larry.

The wife and meself used to get a beer allowance of 48 cans of Tiger or Anchor beer a month in Singapore Harry,I think you could have locally bottled Guinness as well. I used to sell mine and sup brandy or whisky - it was for nowt in them days.
You can buy 500ml bottles of Guinness at Tesco’s for £1.50 at the moment. Most of the others, such as Newcastle Brown is £6.00 for four at Morrison’s this way.

hiya,
Not keeping too bad Larry,If I just keep taking the tablets and breathing
I should last a bit longer, hope you are well and keeping in the good books
of your good lady, sounds like you’re behaving yourself she doesn’t seem to
be curtailing your malt intake I’m at the stage where I’ve got to steal a drop
when her backs turned but she’s not too bad she does tend to turn a blind
eye some of the time, might just sneak another before bedtime, have fun.

I notice a few of the supermarkets have a few deals on bottled beer at the moment.
hiya,
I wonder why it is that the brewers can more or less give their beer
to the supermarkets but charge their tied tenants in their pub outlets
exhorbitant prices which they have to pass on to the punters who are
now stopping going to the pubs because they can buy the stuff in the
S/Ms at less than half price the number of British Pubs is diminishing
in record numbers and this combined with the stupid no-smoking rule
(and I don’t smoke) will see a fantastic constitution disappear altogether.
thanks harry, long retired.
Where’s Harry? Just want to tell him that last evening I opened a new bottle, took a taste, and I have a new friend for life.
12 year old Caol Ila.
I like Islay whiskies but that stuff is as good as it gets in my opinion. I thought Ardbeg was good, but Caol Ila is better.

We haven’t got a pub in our village Harry. The nearest is two miles away in the next small village.Several pubs in this area have closed in the last 2 years.Drink driving, the smoking ban, high business rates and other costs have all contributed to their demise. As you say the supermarkets sell alcohol a lot cheaper and more people stay in and have a drink.I’m one of those. The only time I go in a pub is when I’m on holiday and then I find them to noisy with all the racket coming from various things installed in them.
I used to like going into the local pub and having a chat with some of the older blokes and hearing about different things from this area, but now there aren’t many locals left . I’m one of the old boys.
Cheers Dave.

See Dave I said you was one of the old boys, but you dodged answering me when I said you have a bus pass!

No I haven’t got a bus pass Norm.I think you qualify at 60 in this area.Don’t know if that applies everywhere.I don’t think one would be any use to me because of access issues and not being fixed by a tie down in the bus.I have my vans and Tracy has her car,so I don’t need one.Age wise yes I qualify, but as they wouldn’t let me drive the bus.I’d rather take one of my vans.
Cheers Dave.
