A mate of mine in work used to run on the fridges for CADWALLADER, Dave Ellis, he says the wages werent great and some of the tackle was past its best but it was a good job and he had more money it his own pocket working for Cads 10 years ago than he has now working for the mighty (CRAP) Exel.
His dad worked for DEE VALLEY out of Llangollen they always ran very smart motors, any one got anything on them.
Any pics out there for these two firms that anyone can put on the pic`s forum?.
Bob, used to live in Coventry, remember Hercock Simpson in Leicester at that time running F88’s on continent, big smart yard, nice motors at that time only in Leicester.
Cabmont,Cables Montague from Liverpool area,I think.
Fairfreight from Atherstone, couple of mates of mine worked for them,Steve Hayden and Billie “wizz” did transport for 3M to continent.
Shenandoah,S. Ireland taken over by P&O.
Murphy’s Transport Ballymena, had a lot of Transconti,s and even some Fodens, went bust.
Kelly Freight,Six Mile Cross & Beragh .Yard at 6mile cross now taken over by Mulvennas Transport,At one time nearly everybody seemed to ship to N. Ireland on kellys a/c,perhaps thats why there no longer running.
regards derek

LOWE PADDOCK WOOD - taken over by jack henley and therefore WRM, may be wrong?
Fraid so - Lowes were bought by Turners (Soham) and closed down. I have a picture somewhere of a Lowes 6LYT-powered E-Series ERF (with cow-bar top bumper) pulling a Turners tri-axle fridge.
another name came up today while searching for something to do with work - falcongate (they were involved in a legal case in 1992 handled by the lawyers our CMR insurers use, which is still refered to as a sort of test case even now)
apparently they’re still operating in a very small way, but funny thing was doing a google search first gives you the website for a hungarian punk band, wonder if they took the name from seeing those blue DAFs passing through when they were kids?!
thomson jewitts anyone? aka tom and jerrys
some cracking blokes on there… dave bywater(blown out of his cab by a gas cylinder)… big al… various others who i cant name.
didnt they take over bartons european and m.e work david?
JA Bunn Keynsham was bought out and taken over by Gagewell
Falcongate are still doing a bit of Oil rig work from Yarmouth and Aberdeen which was the mainstay of their original business
Thompson Jewwitt was bought out by United Carriers when Bunzl owned them if I remember correctly. although it might not have been Bunzl. Is UCI the remnants of Tom and Jerry?
What about Fullers of Slough doing the Mars work?
And while Im on Mars, where did Charlie Pryor get to? They use to run some of the most dilapidated old fridges to the gulf, and still managed to load in Mars
Thompson Jewitt were part of the Bunzl set up with United Carriers and UCI and there was another outfit in there white with green writing, whose name escapes me ,they had tautliners on cross channel type work , possibly car components. My brother worked for United Carriers, they shut down when he was on longterm sick , he was glad he didnt need to go back.
Malc…i met the son of charlie Pryor in turkey…i think it was his idea to diversify into road haulage…the firm is still going but with plant hire…the original business…
falcongate i believe is a shipping company with a fleet of their own ships…the transport side was used as a tax loss for the main business…a good company i believe to work for but they never gave their drivers any mony to run with apart from what was needed for the trip…a very easy livery to recognise though and some good drivers…
sad that these once great companies are no longer with us…albeit some on a smaller scale…or lost forever…

I met son of Pryor too, I remember them loading from Mars but saw him down in Hungary one weekend. Another face was there at the time. Steve Chambers from Manchester, (No Wife, Great Life)
Falcongate had a very strange pay scheme if I remember, they had exactly the correct amount of fuel in the belly tanks and had accounts with agents along the way, virtually minimising the need to carry money. except for fines and bribes. They always had modern trucks, albeit low powered Dafs.
The small office at Birkenhead was for sale, but the company was based in Aberdeen I think

United Carriers bought out Robsons too and closed them down in all their glory

Can’t say JB, didn’t know they did European as such just jumped on the Iranian bandwagon and, it seemed to me, were there one minute and gone the next - the wagons not the bus side I mean.
Thompson Jewitt. A real blast from the past for me. I first approached them as a young inexperienced driver when they were at Ruddington and I had read of this local firm starting a service to Sweden. As to me the Woolwich and IoW ferries were exciting in those days I was straight down there. They were running D series Ford day cabs and the word was that the drivers could take a wife or girlfriend along with all hotel expenses paid. As I didn’t have either (wife or girlfriend) at the time I thought ‘now that’s what I call a perk’. Didn’t get the job though, nor years later when I went to Sutton for an executive position in my ‘time to get a proper job’ period.
Same thing (twice) at your old stamping ground on Clifton Boulevard. Don’t know why but Nottingham firms just didn’t want to employ me on international work. Worked for most of the others there though
re tom &jerries
one of bartons drivers , ■■■■ brierley, told me that bartons decided to give up the truck side of their business and approached old man thompson he apparently put the purchase to the board of thompson jewit who turned him down . so he went ahead and bought the four trucks and trailers along with permits. he asked the drivers to join him and t j trucking was formed . christened as tom &jerry the the drivers worked from home ,as they were still payed on trip money they used to get the longer runs to austria that the hourly payed thomson jewit drivers could not do in a week…like all good things it came to an end when i think they were taken into the thomson jewit fold which was then taken over by bunzle
A bit more about Tom and Jerry. In the early 70`s I did some work out of there and my boss was paying me thre same as their own drivers. At that time it used to be if I remember 4days for Benelux and Northern France, 5days Southern France and Germany ,6days for Italy etc. This worked well for me as I could do 2 into Brussels weekly!! 8days pay and 8 nights out and home at the weekend!!!
