Heres a company for you Trucky…

Robsons owned by Charlie Robson and used to import beer, as a sideline they ran the Tottenham Hotspurs team coach …Due to the sponsors (Holstein) being one of Charlies biggest customers, for some reason Charlie thought the coach would be untouched when parked up in his yard off Evelyn St Deptford, (Right opposite my house) in the Heart of Millwall FC country :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

Robsons had some nice liveried trucks, none more so than the limited edition Scania Centurions he bought.

Charlie also had a warehouse off the Old Kent Road in the old Railway marshalling yards, which was full of Corned Beef and exotic beers, Unfortunatly he had to leave there in a hurry as he had forgotten to ask British Railways if they minded him useing their disused warehouse :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

remember back in early 90s jamaican guy used to drive for them used to see him tipping at banks,s brewery wolverhampton nice scania motor too centurian if i remeber rite?
were have all the years gone?

that would be chicken george

I used to travel with my mate when I was a kid in his white road boss with a tank for ibis international or Morgan overland trucking in another guise. They bought one of them famous bra marathons as well. They had 3 whites as I remember the other two were cabovers they pulled tilts as well. They were based in alsager stoke on Trent, black and green, never forget my mate taking another driver out for a spin in the road boss and him getting travel sick and spuin down the steps

just thought id put these up for you two of the whites road commander & road boss and the ex brs marathon with a young me next to it in that my dad drove for barry morgan many moons ago…

i used to work for Simon Sargent 1987 to 1989, with Dave ‘barra’ Barraclough, cyril was in the office, a young lad called nick, and dave cowie, i used to trunk for TNT and do france for Fairfreight and take it in turns with barra to do stuttgart, was for Wilsons but changed to Scansped… was on Roadtrains, Barra left, think he went to work for Gary George and simon bought a 113 scania which Bob Thurgood drove…simon was a good bloke to work for…
there was a subbie at the time on there doing Holland named Brian something, from Tamworth, i think that was where he was from or somewhere about…
when he finished Alan scothern used to do some work also, he then went to pull for Fairfreight, with little billy…

When i finished for simon i went to work for Fairfreight, with Billy Whizz, Stevie Haydon, Des used to be in charge of the Warehouse at that time…Fairfreight was bought out by French company Debeaux who was then bought out by Trans Alliance who bought a lot of companies to compete with Norbert’s
then i went to work for Litt-Haul intwas with them for about 6 years… we used to pull for French company TOE, who eventually was also bought out by Trans Alliance, so was GBE and a lot of other companies

Tammy:
its nice to see alot of old companies being remembered. keep them coming
robsons"border squadron" bought out by UCI colours changed then closed down.
CRS from glasgow “crazy road show”
southern transport services from East Kilbride
Elan the uk side of DHL…anyone remember snoopy
was it PALLETS the parcel firm who ran bright yellow trucks
and independent with think pink…PInk TRUCKS!!! M.A.N.s too
S.J Edwards from leighton Buzzard

Fairfrieght was bought out by debeaux which intern has been taken over…cant think of who by at the moment. i used to work for Simon Sargent at the time. along with dave “bara” baraclough, bob thurgood who left to go to cavewood when they where just south of narborough leic. bara has now retired and does some occasional agency work for dairy crest at nuneaton. dave had a lot of running pals, one being Flipper who got his name after putting a truck in a river on the continent, many more might now dave as he drove the red roadtrain that simon had then complained like hell when he got a new scania…

mckellars used to run a lot of hellmans freight. with “hurryup” harry doing a shuttle from rainham to tamworth daily after giving up the continental side. harry had a stutter, hence the “hurryup” John McCann also worked for mckellars before going to GnS, john now has his own trucks and runs one on bricks and blocks the other he drives on containers out of felixstowe.

i used to work for city transport. 93 to 96,and thats where i got my user name. another company no longer around. i had a lot of good times there and would like to catch up with a few that used to work there…thats where i know Rikki from, no he didnt work for city, he was on FVS or prestons of potto can remember which. spending long hours in CCSB at sidcup edmonton and others.

Did Litt-haul have a blue 142 Scania that pulled a cut down tilt for T.o.e carrying metal for a French company. I used to see a guy driving this outfit quite regular at IMI in Dundee , I think he came from Wolvey ?

oops double post !

AMG INTERFREIGHT

Well known to me. I used to work at Mavetons and Alec Griffiths yard was just around the corner at North Farm Loughton, He used to run his trucks in AMG livery, but often was running Schenkers gear on behalf of Mavetons, and Mavetons often ran his loads depending on who had a truck in the area

ALBERT FISHER

Was based in Plough Way Deptford, they took over the old Parker Packing Factory and their yard backed on Gains Transport Yard where I was working…

BJ MYERS
Ran some nice trucks Iveco Turbostars were a mainstay of the fleet… but ran them all hours… they got closed down by the Ministry…

Rikki…the beer i was gonna buy you is now cancelled…i didnt expect you to answer all of these companies names…so theres at least 4 that youve worked for…i wonder where they are all now…maybe…under the banner of some large conglomerate…i do know that roger and his brother from dow freight have started up again under the banner R&J…but are doing trailers only…mainly pulled by subbies…ps…keep ya shirt on…

I seem to know most of these Trucky. Are you saying they are all no more now?
I don’t think so. Surely Lloyds at least are still going.
Audnel of Leicester used to do a lot of our export work at Toray, and indeed took over for a time at least the domestic work too after I left. Also Fairfreight did the French stuff earlier I think.
PIE (Pacific Intermountain Express) was an American company which did ME work I think.
AMG I seem to remember running to Italy when I was running for Cheverall’s of Luton.
Partrick at Kettering was one of my (failed) attempts to get back into international work at one point.
Martintrux, Wentmore, Cadwallader, UFO - all drivers I’ve crossed paths (and bars) with at various times.
Beresford’s of Stoke always had nicely turned out ERFs. Seems funny when I think back at our initial longing for the newly arrived foreign trucks in the 60s or 70s I suppose, because in about 1985 I was parked up in a Turin back street with my F89 (a truck I still prize above all others) and went visiting with a Beresford driver in his luxurious ERF complete with little table, swing round seat and plush upholstery. Must have been a top of the range job.
That was when I was driving for White Trux. Another on your list. And another story!

Salut, David.

BJ MYERS - Blue & Silver units on traction out of Greenwich, long gone i think
L.E.P. - Now known as Geologistics, still into freight forwarding
PARTRICK INTERNATIONAL - Taken over by another Northants firm?
CABMONT - Rings a bell but cannot think where from?
SEABOURNE EXPRESS - still going but not in transport, now own dutyfree shops in Middle East and other varied businesses
R.H.TROTTMAN - another one which rings a bell?
MURPHYS - as in Northern Ireland, lots of Transcons on swinging meat work
MARTINTRUX - reputedly had problems when Ministry discovered that actually they DIDN’T have a load of Italian based drivers who took over the driving from Mt.Blanc
BOWLER INTERNATIONAL - Still at Basildon doing forwarding I think, there was a great bloke on for them doing Barca every week in mid 80s, Johnny Paterson - absolute scream to run with
KELLY FREIGHT - Green and white fridges out of Ireland?
LACEYS BARKING - Nicely turned out red & grey trucks, also ran coaches
LLOYDS LUDLOW - definitely still going, steel deliveries in uk mainly
CADWALLADER - think they packed up after the MD told his local LA not to tell him how to run his fleet
VISBEEN - still going
U.F.O. - white fridges out of dewsbury, went bust early 90s
HICKS - still going
LOWE PADDOCK WOOD - taken over by jack henley and therefore WRM, may be wrong?
HARGREAVE - transport side taken over by turner’s of soham, still pork producers
WHITE TRUX - mr white now runs european (blue scanias) out of dover
MCKELLA - still see trailers around with name on, usually pulled by carr bros
DOW FREIGHT - as truckboy said now RJ int’l, eastern europeans, a few subbies + 2 own trucks

right ho then, how about:

J.A.BUNN, KEYNSHAM
HERCOCK CONTINENTAL, LONDON
E.B.POVEY, IVER HEATH

DAVID PRINCE, BRISTOL
F A DAYSON, CARLISLE
ARTHUR CUTHBERT, NORTHAMPTON
BRITISH INTERNATIONAL, SOUTHAMPTON
HIGHFIELD HAULAGE, WIGAN
ARTHUR GREEN, STEETON (KEIGHLEY)
LUMSDENS, MAIDSTONE

See!..got all your minds working didnt i ?..i worked for a few of those firms named above…and of course a couple are still going today…albeit on a smaller scale…JJ i know of 4 from your list…but thats all…Rikki…young mick robson is still operating out of the old convoys wharf in deptford…and still doing the beer…i did a bit of work into him out of youngs brewery in wandsworth…a few years back…5 to be precise…but they wre a good outfit to work for…the centurian was something else…and the tank disguised as a heineken beer can…they were going over the water quite a bit but the old man had to pull out of transport after being accused of some kind of skullduggery…well thats the rumour anyway…just goes to show…even the biggest can fall by the wayside…i call it greed…keep your shirt on !!..and fancy you being a deptford boy ?..say no more…

jj72:
HERCOCK CONTINENTAL, LONDON

Started out in Leicester as Hercock and Simpson selling, then transporting coal. This would be in the international free for all which started in the 60s I suppose.
Another was Barton’s of Beeston Nottingham. For a hundred years running buses (the largest family fleet in the country) then suddenly bought a few Fiats and started shooting them off to Iran. Didn’t last long though. Now owned by their one time great rivals Trent Motor Traction. The Barton family was too numerous for all to work in the firm. One of them became a swimming instructer, another, Alf, a body man with a paintshop in the bus depot. It was either him or yet another Barton who had a tacho business there too.

Salut, David.
