HARGREAVE - transport side taken over by turner’s of soham, still pork producers

Hi there I actually work in the office at Hargrave International. The pork side has ceased trading now for about the past 3 years. As JJ72 said we are now owned by Turners. We don’t do any continental work anymore, and instead of the old snowflake livery you may remember, we now have a new one, does it look slightly familiar?

rexyu:
Taunton Meat Haulage anyone??

Active in frigo circa 1965. White Mercs as I recall.

One of their older drivers showed me the way to enjoy Rome for a weekend!!!

Not still going, are they. Got an idea that North Devon Meats took them over. Could be wrong though

Steve

they were taken over by / formed part of the langdon’s empire

Hah! I’ve been looking thru’ countless copies of Truck and T&D for that.
Unfortunately it must be in an issue that I no longer have from around 1988-9,so if you’ve still got it can you scan it and mail it to me?
I was working for Goodway’s at the time and had a P112 Scannie in Morline colours.Morline were the agent for the Russian state container line.

jj72:
MARTINTRUX - reputedly had problems when Ministry discovered that actually they DIDN’T have a load of Italian based drivers who took over the driving from Mt.Blanc

Martintrux still exist as a customs agent in Dover.
A history explaining why they no longer run trucks can be found at

ELDRIDGE TRANSPORT from East london…Anyone know?

They used to do Scandinavia with Seddon Atkinsons. They had a yard near some railway arches but not exactly sure of the road name.

trucking482002:
Bob, used to live in Coventry, remember Hercock Simpson in Leicester at that time running F88’s on continent, big smart yard, nice motors at that time only in Leicester.
Cabmont,Cables Montague from Liverpool area,I think.
Fairfreight from Atherstone, couple of mates of mine worked for them,Steve Hayden and Billie “wizz” did transport for 3M to continent.
Shenandoah,S. Ireland taken over by P&O.
Murphy’s Transport Ballymena, had a lot of Transconti,s and even some Fodens, went bust.
Kelly Freight,Six Mile Cross & Beragh .Yard at 6mile cross now taken over by Mulvennas Transport,At one time nearly everybody seemed to ship to N. Ireland on kellys a/c,perhaps thats why there no longer running.
regards derek

Cabmont were based Erith in Kent but may have had a yard in Liverpool but just a small one. Their drivers were pulling Norfolk Line trailers out of dartford docks for years.

I worked for McKellar Trucking (as it was known then) in the early Eighties. The transport manager was Danny Bungay, Ian McKellar’s brother in law. I have seen Danny driving around in a Scania Topline a few times in McKellars colours so maybe he is just running the one motor. Nice bunch of guys on this firm. Would always help out even when the going got greasy. Nothing was too much trouble. Not the same game anymore now. Blokes just drive past and leave you to it if your stranded.

One truckboy will surely remember…
Grangewood, used to have a yard in Greenwich,Scania 141’s and fridges to everywhere.
I think they were maroon units with a cream coloured roof,I went to their yard one day to change some meat-hooks,it wasn’t very big!

I was working for Seabourne when UPS took over.
Mr Bourne sold his European Express Parcel business to UPS who were trying to get into the UK market to compete with the likes of TNT.
UPS took over the depots, staff and contracts.

The “courier” side remained in Mr Bournes hands.
