Lawrence Dunbar:
0Well Ive just come accross this old reciept for my first motor car £20.00. The Co I bought it off belonged to Alfie Ellis the haulage man Green motors did a lot of graft out of Commercial Plastics, I wonder, has anyone got any pictures of his motors, he also did the work out of De La Rue the money printers ■■?< Regards Larry.
Well Alfie Ellis did run quite a lot of AEC Mustangs in the good old days, A good friend of mine Billy Maddox [RIP], had one on trunk, Regards Larry.
Well it looks like my old mate MR Hewitson has finaly hung up his boots as his wagon is for sale at Kevin Dixons.
I know you read this thread Graham so id just like to wish you all the best for the future.
regards Brian.
It would more than likely have been an AEC, they made up most of the fleet around 1968 when I started there, the newer Ergo cabbed Mercury and Mandators, the earlier MKII Mercury’s, and MKV Mandators with the Park Royal cab. Although AEC was the prefered make, there was also a sprinkle of flat front and bonneted Mercs, several D1000 Fords with unpainted cabs instead of the Ellis livery and the lone Mammoth Minor tractor. An ERF was aquired a bit later and the GUY Big J’s had just made an appearance before the company was sold. I also remember two dead Scammell Highwayman tractors in the field next to the yard which were last run in the mid Sixties. I’d love to see your Dads pic of his motor Tynexdaz and also his name, I might just remember it, I recall the night trunk. There was some great lads driving for Ellis then, I only ever saw Big John (on for Elddis then) and another lad in later years from all those, happy days. Cheers Franky.
His name is Bob Casey, he is 80 this year, i last saw that photo about 10 years ago, it will be in his loft, i might get up there soon and have a scout around.

Bob Casey’s name rings a bell- I’m sure he worked for E.Robson(Gateshead) in the early 60’s, when I was there. Regarding Alfie Ellis,I recall that in the late 50’s/early 60’s, he ran Ford Traders, some of them box vans which were in Commercial Plastics colours(Red, with’ Fablon’ lettering). At the same time, Waugh’s also ran Traders. Regards, Eric.
Aye Ellis did run quite a few Traders in those days, they also did a lot of work for DELARUE the firm that printed currencey for Spain & other foreign countries, My old freind Billy Maddox [RIP] Drove an S Type Bedford for a while with a Leyland Engine, It was a good puller as I recall him telling me. Regards Larry.
Another old driver who did a spell at Alfie Ellis,s The late Laurence Bamford from Hazelrigg, He drove a 4 Wheel Trader Van on the Delarue job running currencey to the docks for export, There was always a second man apparentley on thi sort of run, for security reasons, He reckoned it was a real cushy number, Happy Days Eh Lads, Regards Larry,
Bob Casey rings a bell here too, although I can’t put a face to the name yet, have a good look in the loft Tynexdaz you might find more than one pic of past old motors your Dad drove. If my Father was still alive he would be 85 now so in the same age range as your Dad, they could well have known each other from those days. Also try and ask him as much as you can now, if he’s still able to remember back then, my old man couldn’t really tell you what he’d done the week before but he recalled many tales from early days, just wish I’d asked a lot more before he died when he was Eighty. I’m having a think of the names of old Ellis drivers, one I easily remember is Alan Webster as he was an Uncle of my mate Phil who I worked alongside as apprentice’s. Your Dad will remember Yorky and Taff and Chick the Union Shop Steward (Surnames haven’t come back yet!). I need someone to jog my memory too! Cheers Franky.
I was at the steam rally at Beamish at the weekend. (Magic vehicles), I will post them later. I saw this motor and it brought back memories of collecting beer money

Larry, retirement’s going ok, although I am working ths week for my good friends E&N Ritchie. It stops me getting bored and helps with the funding of the neck oil, Irish of course !!
Regards Kev.
I remember seeing the owner of Gerry the drum people at R.A.H. meetings, he used to come with another member Don Meston who ran a tipper at that time, perhaps someone has some more photos somewhere, ? Regards Larry
Talking of Alfie Ellis my first load on General Haulage on distance was out of Commercial Plastics for Collinsons Bros (Chopwell) who I think got the work with Sheperds after Ellis although at the time Sheperds were mostly rigids & we had the bulk of it. The load was flock wall paper on the roll ready to cut & box i took it to Bedwas South Wales on a 33ft tandem axle box Trailer back load out of Whitney Blankets Oxford to Embassy Stamfordam Rd, remember at the time Harry Collinson saying we will keep you on short ones etc, till you get the hang of it
