Itâs probably a McGregor Hatch, they used to have a big place in Blyth. Donât know if theyâre still around now. regards Kevmac47.
Thanks Kevmac for the information, hatches were covered with heavy timber planks when I used to visit Blyth regularly in the late 1940s and 50s. Cheers Leyland 600.
F.Troop will probabley know more than I do about McGregors, I think the depot Fergy has at Blyth was theirs, also there was a Depot at Wimbourne Quay some years ago, Whitley Bay area also comes to mind., plus in the 50/60s Wright Anderson at Gateshead made hatches for McGregors Smiles for Miles had the work, we ran them to Burntisland, Dundee, Birkenhead, great loads , crane on crane off, happy days, Regards Larry.

Hello Larry,Leyland600,kev.
You were right to say that Mcgregors in Blyth [Burt Street] made the hatch covers, there works were next to Wimbourne Quay,They olso had a factory at Foxhunters estate Whitley Bay that made the fittings for the hatch covers.
They were a very large company with work all over the world and they sub contracted a large amount of work out.
They were a very big customer for Fergusons,Often 5 loads a day all over the country up to 24 ft wide.Thats when the target trailers with the chassis on the outside were used.
Before Fergusons the depot at Kitty Brewster was owned by Gregsons Shipbuilding Company which was managed by Harry Mitchison who was the general manager of Blyth Shipyard which went into liquidation.
Thompsons of Blyth, another old firm, in 1931 they had 9 vehicles, Their depot was on Princess Louise Road, Tele. Blyth 168, I think Fergy bought them out ? What do you say F.Troop, ? great old photos of great old motors, Eh, Regards Larry.

Hello Larry,
Fergusons Transport certainly bought a few companies in his time,
Here are the names of some,
Baird Road Services,
Thompsons of Blyth,
Eagle Road Services,
Dodds of Bedlington,
Hewitt of Morpeth,
Clarks of Sunderland,
Cutlers of Poole,
Broads of Plymouth,
Redpaths of Wooler,
Waughs of Benton.
Aye F.Troop, quite a a lot, the only one I dont remember is Baird, Were they a local firm ?, Regards Larry.
Chris Webb:
H.Tarren from Crook was another, did a lot of work for Pickford Holland who made refractory bricks. And have Burn Brothers been mentioned âTyne,Tees,Wear and Clydeâ on the front of their motors.Simpson Bros from Stocksfield was another IIRC.
I think Sandersons were taken over by Durhams at Billingham,I remember they ran a trunk to Lichfield in the 70s changing over with S.Protheroe from Swansea(or was it Illtyd Thomas).
teesside carriers church rd stockton.later took over by crossleys m/boro.

stevens great ayton.run pole trailers out off lackenby.
The May edition of Heritage Commercial has the second of two articles on another well known firm from the very edge of the north east, Selby Morton of Wooler. I remember delivering steel for their workshop in the late 60s early 70s when I worked for Miles Druce Metals. It had to be one of the easiest places ever to find as it was on the main road north of the town all on its own. If you missed it next stop Coldstream and find an opticianâs! I have watched the corrogated building gradually deteriorate over the years ( a mirror image of industry in the rest of our area), so was suprised to see the picture of the building still standing. Regards Kevmac47
