Hi Larry,

I was thinking I must be the last to remember Alfred Bell. When I was young we always passed at least one of their red ad green vans on the AI. They used t be based in the centre of Newcastle originally.

Another major kick in the teeth for this area today with the news that Alcan is to close. I first went onto the site in 1969
delivering steel when the plant was under construction. In the seventies Alcan was a major customer of Waughs, we did a
lot of work out of there to South Wales, Anglesey, and Sanquhar. On the plus side the good news from Nissan is a boost.
Unfortunately it’s not any consolation to the Alcan employees. regards Kev

Hi Kev there has been no mention about Alcans Site at Fort William closing, have you heard anything ?, Regards Larry.

Alcan nice canteen.

Hello Larry, I havn’t heard anything about Fort William, but the news from Lynemouth can’t help it. Do you remember the three trailers Alcan had for running
alumina powder to Fort William ? They were fitted with super singles which was very rare in the 70s, I had a slow puncture with one of these trailers at F/W.
No tyre company in Scotland at that time had a super single in stock and they all refused to repair it. In the end I ran back home with it, I had to stop
regularly to check the pressure but I got it back. ( good job it was back empty) regards Kev.

Hi Larry,

Re Alfred Bell,

I’m not old enough to remember them running an Albion like in your advert. My memory of Alfred Bell was Bedford O model luton vans. When they moved out of the centre of Newcastle they went away from removals onto distribution and no longer had their familiar red and green distincive livery, not disimilar to your own livery.

During the years I attended the British association of removers meetings the secretary was Miss Wilcox, who had worked all her life at Alfred Bells. In fact she was secretary during the time I was chairman.

Alfred Bell was particulary interesting to me as, in the 1930’s when my grandfather was looking for his first furniture van (Before that time he had ran platforms and cattle trucks that could be broken down into dropsiders) he made friends with (I might be wrong but I thnk his name might have been Mr Marks) Alfred Bell. This chap contacted my grandfather and said they knew of a large luton van for sale and would have bought it themselves but for some reason couldn’t at the time, My grandfather went to see it and Alfred Bell said if he bought it they had an excess of removal work they would pass onto him. Dad said for its day it was a massive van (I cannot remember the make) but for one reason or another my gandfather did not buy it, buying shortly afterwards a Morris Commercial luton. but because of these dealings from all of my memories from my youth I watched for Alfred Bell vans whilst in a car. They had a lot running on A1 in the fifties, greatly out numbering Hoults and Pickfords.

Miss Wilcox blamed the move from central Newcastle on the dimise of their removal business, saying out of site out of mind, so the red and green vans disapeared from our roads

Best wishes and thank you for te memory

Carl
