Old North East haulage companies (Part 1)

Albion waiting to tip potatoes at Bowmans on the quayside at Blyth.

This Albion of Fergusons is a 1937 Reg, from Carmarthen Nice to see these old motors, Regards Larry.

Speaking of old Albions I remember Blyth Co-oP having a one still running im the 50s, The driver was a tall ginger headed lad, he used to come on to the Quayside at Newcastle and load from various warehouses, including Baxters, any photos about ? ,Regards Larry.

Hi f.troop, where abouts on Blyth Quay, was it down near the Low Ferry landing is this photo taken, I cannot recall a warehouse etc along there but it is almost 60 years since I was a regular visitor to the quay.

Thanks f.troop, I remember Biltons the copper pipe bending specialists almost directly behind the Harbour offices, they seemed to have loads of work in those days with their copper pipe services to the coastal shipping trade. Did you know anyone at J.W. Colpitts, Ship Repairers down on the Quay where Eddie Ferguson House is today. ?
Cheers Leyland 600.

I can remember collecting from Biltons and delivering pipes and speical parts they made all over the country,We olso did a lot of work for Culpits, they did a lot of repairs to ships on the docks and quayside,One of the main guys at Colpits was a chap called Bob Scott who i beleive later owned Culpits for a while. He did a lot of repairs to Fergusons trailers and propertys,There was olso Bell Dunn & Keeleysides the ship chandlers.
Ive put this photo on of a Ferguson lorry with the Biltons board hooked on the side.

Heres an advert dated 1947, of an old haulage firm, They also had a depot at Seaton Burn which was G,Watt Haulage whom they bought out. My old pal Parky drove for them. Regards Larry.

Don’t know where or when that one of J & B McKenna Ltd (Paddy McKenna’s) was taken, but I drove that motor from new. M978 DVK was an MAN 22:420 with an Eaton twin splitter box in it. The wagon drove lovely once you got used to the twin splitter and I would love to get a copy of that photo as I haven’t one of that wagon.

Hi ftroop. The main man at Colpitts up to about 1980 or so was Charlie Holgeth & his wife who was formerly a Colpitts. I think they sold out to some of their staff who now run the company still using the original trading name. There was a blacksmith by the name of Ronnie Stokoe who must have worked there all his life. Charlie was a big pal of Eddie Fergusons, I spent many happy holidays there as a boy travelling all over the north east in Colpitts Morris Commercial little wagon with the late Bob Mann and Johhny Thompson all about 60 years ago when Blyth was a bustling coal shipping port.
Thanks Leyland 600

Here’s a pic of Albert Kelly who recently from Fergies after 27 years plus another 8years at Clarks Haulage of Sunderland who Fergy took over in 1984. Also some more Fergy drivers.
