Old North East haulage companies (Part 1)

mickd1958 I worked with Brian Young at Collinsons also new a lot of Wrights drivers from the 80s dont think Brian ever worked for them. Not sure but I think he went back to Gradys from Collinsons so perhaps had his accident there.Ray Wright give me a months work begining 2009 after I was paid off xmas 2008 at Elddis. Knew it wasnt going to last as he was in the process of selling out.
Brian was also the man who gave me the handle sqeaking greek due to my resemblance to a fat greek singier Demis Rousos

brothertonmick:
Hi harry, can’t remember that far back but have been told about ma greens by my parents when the old great north road ran through the village, who were you on for when you stopped there ?, regards mick.

hiya,
Mick it would have most likely been Blackburn BRS when i first went in there but have also called in when on for Killingbecks on the rare occasion i had time to stop, did’nt get that way for years and the first call after a long spell it had changed to Normans and i had moved from the North West to the North East did start driving in 1957 was first steered in there by my trailer mate who had been put off the road with failing eyesight he was near pension age, but taught me a lot he’d only ever driven wags and drags so was a good help to a "newbie"he finished his last few weeks as the depot sweeper upper when they parked the eight leggers and trailers up for the last time and i went solo with a Bristol artic.

Hi, WOW
If this is a 6X4 double drive,Foden 2 stroke with Foden 12 speed 3 lever box, I owned it in the mid 80’s.
I sold it to Melvin Bell, Stocton Haulage. At that time the fuel tank was behind the cab .It had being used
with a bolster and pole trailer.About 1980 freinds of mine,Maurice and John Henderson of Slaley were
still running a 8x4 2 stroke on round timber work fitted with a Highland Bear crane .

hi greek
im sure Brian told me he had his accident when he worked for coxons at annfield plain.he never had an accident whilst at gradys saw him the other day in asda doesnt look any older!

Just come on tonight and I see we’re up to 50 pages, not bad for less than a year. Thanks to everybody who’s posted and keep them comin’. Some great pics on here and and even better stories, surely there can’t be many companies we haven’t covered by now.
Cheers, Bri

I am sure there was a Tremble running out of Long Benton with a fleet of tippers, green motors carrying scrap

Bri, cant find anything on these transport companies, all gone now.

Arthur Wedgwood, Darlington.
Bobby Isle’s, Darlington.
Walker Bro’s,Darlington.

Anybody mentioned Transport Services Birtley or Crossmans
Remember a story a mate of mine told me when he worked for Crossman had a bald tyre on his trailer told the gaffer ,come on son we will go a get you a new one, on which they headed off to the big layby at Whitemare Pool plenty trailers lying about there though none of them his, he then took a wheel off one of them. I think my mate jacked that day.
