Durham City Transport bought out a firm from Melsonby,nr Scotch Corner, any one remember their name. Got it now,Potts transport i think.

Also Norman Ridley with the box vans from Blackhill, I think it went under G N Ridley used to be my barber before he a brain storm and started in haulage.
We seem to have forgotten the biggest employer in Consett where all the best apprentices came from! Consett Iron Company (CIC) before the British Steel Days. They had a large fleet working out of the garage a Berryedge, with vehicles from chauffeur cars to the 120t slag transporters. The fleet consisted of Ford,Bedford,Austin,Morris with the heavy fleet all AEC’s.
In my day they were double shiffting artics running billets down to the Jarrow Angle Mill, before the artics they were running AEC box tractors with Crane 12 wheel trailers (3 sets of 4 in line)on the job, these vehicles were required to have a drivers mate. They were still using some of these vehicles between company sites when I was there; one interesting load which these vehicles handled was the ‘hot pot’, a trailer loaded with moulton metal they used to double head the load through the main works up the bank and uncouple the front tractor in Consett town with one tractor running the last mile into the Hownsgill plate mill. What would H&S say now.

I can remember Ma Greens used to go in when I was a Kid about 1958, in them days it was an old railway carriage dinner sweet and pint tea 2/6d (12 1/2 p now) and she used to give me an orange on the way out. Can also remember Normans son sitting outside counting the number of punters going through the doors would be about 1967. It did’nt take Norman longto get rid of the carriage and put up the prefabs. I was one of the first to sleep in there when the accomodtion opened all the beds had tartan rugs on them quite a few ended up in the cabs as bonnet covers. Getting out when the road was the A1 was a pain especially if you were going north bound.

And what about “The Fox” pub on the other side, a few drivers got into trouble there with the local ladies…

One for the ex BRS men!
