Old North East haulage companies (Part 1)

Lawrence Dunbar:
Hi Davey My son Nigel rang me to say that Big Gary had passed away, He a real nice lad, We both new him from Fergies, R.I.P. Gary Nigel & Larry.

Aye I thought Nigel would of known but just thought I’d put it on here hope you’s are all well.

Sad news Davey, he was a nice lad, always had a big smile when you bumped into him.
Regards Kev.

Such a shame Gary was a lovely lad, always took time to chat and give a hand, very well known by many Northeast drivers. RiP Gary.

I remember being at Alconbury Truck Stop one night and Gary was there too, We were having our dinner when he got a phone call on his mobile, He asked me iLf I had a pen so I gave him a one so he could write something down on his hand  Anyway he looked at the pen and said can I keep this Larry  So I said yes, It was one of Dunbars Transport Logo pens, Anyway the next time I saw him he asked if I had anymore pens so I said yes, He asked me for another one as his good lady who he refered to as her indoors kept the one I had given him, He was a great lad to work alongside with, He will be sadley missed by his family and a lot of his workmates, Larry.

You north east blokes are certainly hardy souls, just watching the Arsenal v Newcastle pre amble on tv, it’s enough to freeze your balls off down here today and the Newcastle fans are walking to the stadium with short sleeved shirts on   I’d need a survival kit on personality

RIP Gary. Big Gaz was a top bloke. Lots of good laughs with him at work over the years he will be missed.

Hello Larry, nice to see the photo of the Murray Hogg Thorneycroft. The first wagon I drove was an ex Valley
Carriers Penarth Trident. Had to trim it down to get it under three tons so that I could drive it aged 18.
I don’t imagine Hogg’s ran many of them but you probably know.
Regards, Allan

Hi Allan, Hoggs never ran them This one was bought and restored by the late Colin Hogg, They used to take it to shows, They still have a K2 Austin & A Austin Gypsy, , The Thorny is a 1960 reg, IIRC It was an ex Elliots of Morpeth motor who had it from new, Larry.

Lawrence Dunbar,
Hi Larry, Thanks for the info, the one I drove was registered mid 1963
Regards Allan

very sorry to hear about Gary had some great nights out with him always had a smile on his face, asking about Crows workshop next to the picture house in gateshead, i know G.E.Armstrongs had a fitting shop there when they had Liddle Terrace before they moved to Brandon, we used to drop the trailers in Gateshead lorry park, roughly where the civic centre is now. but i can’t recall Crows being there.
