Old North East haulage companies (Part 1)

I have just read in the local paper that Eddie Kirkpatrick has passed away at 78 years old, He was a long serving worker for Fergusons Transport at Blyth, He was a great bloke to work with, R I P Eddie, L.S Dunbar & Son Transport.Ponteland.

Interesting article about Orrell & Brewster Buzzer. They ended up at a smaller yard at Saltmeadows, the other side of Gateshead. Long gone now.
One of our long serving cattle waggon drivers had a brother that drove for O&B for many years, I think he was one of the last drivers there.

I remember Orwell & Brewsters yard was on Hawks Road Saltmeadows straight opposite the Patent Hammer Pub next to Laws Stores warehouse. Jimmy Miller worked for them for years before coming to Crows in the 60’s.

In 1931 Orrell & Brewsters depot was at the top of Byker Bank running about six wagons tel no 55840, Then in later years J.W.Capstaff Transport had it , Then they moved to a new depot on TVTE, and had a truck stop called the Highway  ,Im an old man and sometimes cant remember all the details so if im wrong please let me know. Larry.

Hi Larry, Jimmy was a nice bloke and I still remember him wearing a smart suit to work as opposed to boiler suits like the other drivers. Good memories!

Pics 7 and 8 look rather like the street/kerb washers that we had in Reading, one came past every evening to wash and brush the main A329 we lived on back in the 50’s.

Pete.
