Hi Tyneside, Harry had 4 skip wagons, two were Albions converted from tippers. He also had a Bedford KM and a Leyland. He eventually sold the skip business to Hargreaves. He had 2 JCB’s which were used on the Coast Road, after 2 years he sold them for more than he paid for them, clever move.
Changing the subject, my cousin Terry O’Brien drove a Big J for Archbolds. I remember going with him to Liverpool with a 20 ton ships propeller shaft. We got to Chester Moor where the police had the road blocked. They searched the cab and trailer looking for McVicar who had escaped from Durham Jail. Held us up for about an hour. These are the things that stick in my mind after all these years.

Hi Kev that’s nice to know that you knew him. Me,my brother Alan and Terry worked for Crows Transport around 1964. They were In their early 20’s but I was only 15. They were on local work and had both passed their driving test whilst working for Ringtons Tea. Alan passed away over 40 years ago now and sadly Terry just a few years ago. I remember Terry’s first long distance job, he had to go to Liverpool and my dad had to show him the way, no Satnav in those days.
