Has anyone else ever noticed how many of the old time drivers wore a shirt and tie for work? My dads mate who drove for London Brick always wore a shirt and tie.

Me dad always wore shirt, tie and cap when at work, accompanied by his briar pipe. As a young lad i would take the wheel (from the passenger seat) of our Ford D 1400 360 TURBO (bought from Patterson’s of Newcastle) as we climbed out of Hawthorn quarry to the top road. By this time dad’s pipe would be fully alight and smoking well! (a happy man and a good time to talk an increase of pocket money from the present 10 bob a week!) He also wore shirt, tie and hat for church on a Sunday (but not the same one’s!)

Smiles for Miles 6 wheeler Fords loaded with bricks at Newburn Brickworks.
