Old North East haulage companies (Part 1)

I’ve just seen an amazing photo of a Wardle’s Volvo F88 8 wheel tipper with a sleeper cab.

Hes had all sorts of motors over the years you name it Barry has had one i recall when he used to run Leyland Roadtrains with cage trailers with loads of tyres for Eastgate Cement works before that he had a F10 and a pair of nearly new R310 Renaults over the years hundreds of motors most have passed through his hands

Ive just enjoyed watching a DVD Film called Payroll, Filmed in Newcastle Area, There is a couple of Bambourghs Thames Trader 4 wheeler tippers from Chester - Le -Street, That were used to ram the security van, Great stuff IMO, IIRC There was another film made about the same time, Two of Jacky Snees 4 wheelers were filmed at The Compass Café at Colsterworth, Plus The Busy Bee Café was also featured IIRC. I cant remember the name, So perhaps someone on this thread might know, One of Snees lads was the late Franky Henzell, Regards Larry.

He was a great lad, l know he was mad keen on those big American gas guzzlers, he always had a different one every time l met him!! Sadly he died very young, l think about the early eighties. Hi Dazcapri, It was about a robbery, The Jacky Snee motors just pulled into the Compass Café & walked in & Franks asked for two teas pet, The crooks were sitting in a corner planning the robbery, IIRC The next bit was shot in The Busy Bee café at Watford & One of the drivers was called Jonny the Ram & involved a young bit of cab traffic IIRC once again, This was filmed in the 60s because Franky was driving a Ergo cabbed Albion/Leyland 4 wheeler flat, I will have a lot more think about it & hopefully the old brain box will come up trumps Eh,  Regards Larry.

The only one I can think of is The Hijackers starring Anthony Booth he drove a six wheel Albion flat it starts in a cafe and he picks a hitchhiker up. It was on ch48 movies4men a couple of months back or you can get it on amazon/eBay if you search for the film smokescreen it’s a double bill with the hijackers, hope that’s the one Larry

Sorry it wasn’t the one Larry the only alfie bass trucking film I can think of is hell drivers. Is there anything else you can remember about the story/plot of the film that might help us figure it out. I’ve had a look on Google at alfie bass films and I think the film’s called passing stranger from 1954 also starring Diane Clineto (I think that’s the right spelling) about an American soldier on the run and hiding out in various drivers cafés hope that helps Larry

Fred Henzel died in the early nineties. He was working as an owner driver with a 142 Scania for John Kerss. He was buried at the church on the hill in Washington Village on a Saturday and his wake was held in the Washington Gardeners. Like you say he was a great lad and very keen on pork pies!
