Old North East haulage companies (Part 1)

Larry, that will happen more often now and in the future, makers have their own computerised programmes to rectify faults to their vehicles which have cost huge amounts of money to develop, to give or even sell this technology to companies is a no go, which means vehicles have to go back to dealerships to have some faults put right, software problems in particular. Modern lorries have many ECU’s positioned around the vehicle for different applications in effect they are computers talking to each other and its the software that usually throws up a fault sometimes when there isn’t actually anything wrong, warning lights etc come on the dash. Small company workshops in particular can’t afford the equipment needed to rectify some faults so the dealer wins and can charge high prices in some cases. The more technical side of being a mechanic is being lost to these dealers while simple servicing and repair will be all the workshop fitters can do. I think I’m going to retire at the right time in a couple of years the job has changed too much just in the last ten years never mind since I started. Cheers Franky.

Hi Larry, seen behind the Bedford is a Newcastle Corporation Leyand Titan PD2 double decker with classic Leyland metal framed body en route to Scotswood. One of a large number of PD2s supplied to the corporation in 1948 I think.

A mate of mine sent me these pics of Geordie Kerrs Foden with a scrap bailer on which came off the road up in the Scottish Isles somewhere. Evidently the bailer was ok but I don’t think the Foden lived to see another trip. He reckons that they had to hire a crane in to pull it back onto the road and the crane wrecked the road so they got the bill for that as well.

That’s terrible news Larry. I know you enjoyed your visits and chats with him.

Please be kind enough to pass my condolences to Fred, Davey, and their sister, if you see them before I do.

Thanks Larry.

I didn’t know George, or Fred & Davey’s sister, Susan? But I believe he was a character, and very fondly thought of. I’m sure he’ll be sadly missed.

The Military Road is closed today (Wed) to accommodate an abnormal load. This will probably be the one. Regards Kev.

My son Paul. recently joined Chatfield DAF as a sales executive and I’m pleased to see my family once more connected in Road Haulage, be it vehicles sales. He has just secured his first large order from George Allison Darlington (another old NE name) for 6 new DAF XF Supercab 460 tractor units.

So I’ll be looking forward as they start to hit the road December.

Although most of the old names have gone over recent years and there are few large hauliers left in the North East, he is finding those who he meets still remember W.H.Williams (Haulage) Ltd of Spennymoor and most appreciate meeting someone who’s bloodline is in transport.

Hi Kev, Thanks for that info, I did get some heavily copyrighted pics sent to me as the outfit left the works but I must respect the confidentiality.
Cheers, Leyland 600.

As well as many Transcontis I remember they stated to buy new Sed Ak 411s and they got Stratos when they were launched. They also used to buy second hand 301 8 wheelers amongst various makes in the fleet. Used to enjoy seeing the Fords - a change from the legions of F7s at the time.

Are they still going under some guise ?
