My 1st Wagon Frankie Thames Trader blow the pic up & I don`t think theres a foreign moter in the whole pic, How times have changed!!!

I remember that trader well built from a arctic went well only problem with it was when tipping you had to be careful as the ram used to put body up to vertical so had to make sure load was moving or it would pull you arese over ■■■ backwards heed

That happened to my old Dad with his little Bedford O Series when he worked for Anthony Mole, they were doing some work building new flats opposite the Infant school in Longbenton. The Teacher pointed out the window and said ‘Oh dear look at that lorry’ and my older Brother said ‘Aye its me Dad’! They used the bucket from the digger to lower the front end and drop the body, there was no damage to the little motor, not sure about my old mans pride though! Franky.

Smiles for Miles had some 6 wheel Dodge tippers with a York trailing axle, You had to be very carefull when tipping on a backward slope because when you pulled forward the front end shot up in the air, A bit scary I may tell you, This only happened with the York type axle, The double drive Traders were OK, I know one of their drivers had some photos which he took at East Layton Quarry not far from Scotch Corner in the earley 60s, I will try and find out where he lives & ask him about them, That’s if he is still about, Its all a long time ago sadley, Happy long gone days, Regards Larry.

When the Tyne Tunnel approach road - from the Coast road to Holystone - was being constructed, there were numerous short wheelbase tippers used to carry the clay from the borrow pit to form the embankments. As the clay was dug out in large lumps it used to lock up on the tailboards when tipping and many a driver ended up “in the air”. To my knowledge there was never any damage or injuries but it was always interesting to see the drivers face when it happened and the recovery techniques. Regards HSP

I can remember when Winthrops was being built at Fawdon there was a lot of good clay being dug out & transported to the Brickyard at Dinnington Pit brick yard a cousin of mine had a ex army 4 wheeler Bedford tipper on this job & he had the same problem when tipping, Regards Larry.

Hi Larry some cracking photo,s there [spot on] keep them coming, regards Gordon

The recent picture from Larry of an Owen Pugh Merc., reminded me that I read in our local paper that Bell Trucks were to supply Owen Pugh with quite a number of new Mercs.I also heard that that Bells were basing a fitter at Owen Pugh. From the number mentioned (can’t remember exactly) It seems that Owen Pugh will more or less standardise on Mercs. In the past of course they have always had a varied fleet ie Seddon Atkinson, Volvo, ERF, Foden, DAF, (any Scania?). Don’t think they have ever ventured in to Renault or Hino!
Regards, Eric.

Didn’t Elddis do this a few years ago with Bell Trucks, I heard they paid their own fitters off and Bell put theirs into Elddis’ workshop to service the Actrosses.
