Hi Servo, The only names that come to mind are Alan Thompson he ran a 6 wheeler Leyland, & Freddie Fosters driver Billy I think his name was he drove the F.86 Volvo 6 wheeler, Freddie had the 6 wheeler KM Bedford plus they also had 2 four wheelers running out of Styford Quarry for Tilcon, Freddie did have a Foden that was one of Tilcons but he ran it out of Moot Law Quarry.Regards Larry.
Hi Larry did that Alan belong Crook, my dad finished Slaters in 1967 and stopped leading out of Newlandside at the back end of that year. He then started for Golightlys , leading coal into Dunston power station from a washer plant at Stanley Ox Hill driving an old 6 wheeler Albion. He left there and went to Corbetts but as you said previous Golightly,s then bought them out. And yes i can remember that foden you posted. regards servo88

A cousin of mine bought from Norman Fit Coxhoe Commercials, It was designed to run at 26T Gross this was before it was legal to run at this weight, When he tried to uprate it the wheel base rules had changed & it was 6 inches too short, So he lengthened the chassis & it was uprated to 28T Gross, It tared off at 9.100.T. giving a 19.400T payload which was good at that time as 30T Gross 8 wheelers didn’t carry much more, So it was cheaper VED, he ran it for some years then sold it to Brian Patterson from Perth, He ran it for a while then he bought an S80 cab from me & plus the stearing box which was power of course, He got all the details from Fodens for the swop, It turned out very well indeed a G Reg Foden with the S80 cab plus the power steering He used to do three trips a week to Beverley with SAI Stuff from Lieth & load lime back to Perth from Coxhoe, Happy haulage days Eh, Regards Larry.
Hi Larry what engine was in it? them old fodens would go forever, if they were looked after. Power steering a luxury… them days, the first one with that what my dad drove was a KM at Corbetts. You said you had been to Windermere, my mate had a speedboat on there and he was friends with whoever owns Ramage Haulage. Thanks for the info on your foden, regards servo88

It had the old Gardner 150. 12 speed Foden box & 5.75 diffs, I used to perform very well, Regards Larry.
Cheers Larry, did you ever have a foden with them 3 leaf spings on the back ? they used to snap like carrots on rough ground. regards servo88.
Hi Prattman you,v been very quiet are you not very well? he,s some more tales about Redmires.Ronnie White come off the road wagons and went on a dumper in newlandside. One day he was parked up at the quarry face to get loaded when there was a fall of stone, the dumper was completely buried, they all thought he would be dead. They dug it out and the steel body canopy over the cab had saved him,not a scratch on him. Another incident there, one sat morning we were driving along the quarry road and there was a 4 wheeler dodge at the bottom of the quarry face, smashed to bits. The driver had come over the tops from Egglestone, got to softly bank found he had no brakes so jumped out, it went through the wall and dropped about 100 foot .regards servo88. I can tell you more later unless i,m boring you.

They did! Sorry to ■■■■ in, I remember an S83 eight wheeler coming new at Tilcon with the old multiplate springs all round, my job for the day was changing all eight for the ‘new’ Taperlites to save weight. I think the rears had two leaves, the front ones had three. They didn’t last long, best thing they did was fit the Rydewell rubber back end!
Pete.

No , mind you the two 8 wheelers we had used to break springs too often, But having said that they did earn their keep, And of course in the 70s I could buy a second hand one from Jimmy Montes at Fencehouse for a fiver, Great lad to doe deals with was old Jimmy, Regards Larry.
Hi servo 88
I am still alive and kicking going into hospital to get a top of blood later today, I have been busy sorting out my photos to go on other threads. I remember the incident of the lorry going over the edge because my dad took me up there to show me and as we were walking back to the car somebody started taking pot shots with an air rifle at us,can you remember what year that happened.Regards prattman.
Hi Prattman its good to hear from you, hope it goes ok for you today, which hospital do you go to? i,m at the Freemans on friday to see the heart surgeon. The date would be roughly 1963, 1964 ish i think, can you remember the tunnel under the road to the other side of newlandside it was still open at that time. He,s a few photo,s from GW Lee,s yard Frosterley.
Hi Larry GW Lee ran a lot of fodens years ago,he bought some ex Slaters when they sold out, he also ran bedfords. regards servo88
