Old North East haulage companies (Part 1)

Hi Prattman that was Daves, think he,s on for Peter Monkhouse now, great photo,s keep them coming. Some of your, previous photo,s of Redmires shows the foden pulling that traction engine out of the show field.Well that was a 2 stroke with a 12 speed box, Reg WPT 420 my dad got that when he started for them, and it had been well worked. The other photo of the one with the Micky Mouse cab had a gardner 150 LX and 12 speed box, pull like a train but the brakes were useless, couldnt stop it and used to go off some times Reg VUP 774. I drove that loaded along the bottom of Derwent Reservoir before it was filled with water, dad said you can tell your kids when your married ,never forgot that. One sat morning he was going down through Stanhope cars were parked and Geordie Lee,s wagon, he was overtaking them and a car come the other way but kept coming.Dad couldnt stop and clipped the rear of Lee,s wagon, the cab just shattered the seat dropped i was covered in glass. To cut the story short he still took the load to Consett me sitting on the bonnet tipped and then drove to Fodens at Darlington with me still on the bonnet. You would get locked up for that now. Hence brand new cab, could tell you some stories. regards servo88.

Hi servo 88
Thanks for the info most of the Redmires photo’s I’ve put on here actually belong to Craig Porter, he’s got loads more it was my intention to go and see him but in my current situation that is not possible but hopefully I will be a lot better by June and I will catch up with him at the Tyne-Tees Run.
You mentioned you had lots of stories you could tell so lets hear them, does Dave Wilson still live in the same spot just out of Toronto. regards prattman.

I’ve posted this thread on the ■■■■■■■ thread but I also think it can come under the north east thread as well,
On the A1 at Westerhope today I spied a Scania plus fridge trailer belonging to Joe Rothery, I took some photo’s for him nearly 20 years ago but then lost touch with him, coming through Brough in 2005 I spied a couple of his parked up I took some photo’s but could not find out where he lived, is he he still living in the area. I knew his father as well who I thought was a perfect gentleman when I knew him he lived in Catterick Village is he still alive and is he still living in the same area. Any information would be welcome, I’ve posted a photo I took in 2005.regards prattman.

Hi Prattmam yes Dave still lives there, sorry to hear about your condition i,v got Muscular Dystrophy , wasting of all muscles. Nowt they can do for me. I worked on them houses over the road from you, Persimmons built them at the rounderbout and at Villa Real.Dad used to let me drive along Newlandside., quarry road out on to Softly bank, down the bank in low second. Then carried on along over the bridge and along to the Stanhope to Westgate road ,19 ton of limestone on its back , 4 ton overweight thats where i used to get back into the passenger seat, i was 15 years old then. O happy days, then at the weigh bridge at Consett we would swap over again and i would drive it down to the stockpile reverse up and tip. regards servo88

Yes Larry, John Hogg died after falling through the roof of his barn whilst doing some repairs, he was a real “hands on” farmer and haulier. Strangely I was talking about him yesterday at Barry’s funeral to Tony Bennett, who worked for Hoggy for years. By the way what a turnout eh!!! His family will hopefully take some comfort from the number of drivers who attended. There were at least eighty of us. He was very well respected. Regards Kev.

Hi servo 88
Found this old postcard from the early sixties among my photo’s and have also posted a photo from the 2013 Tyne-Tees Road Run of a restored Slaters tractor unit. None of the drivers I went with would let me drive the lorries the only time I sort of drove illegaly was when I drove my stepbrothers E.R.F. artic down a 30 mile stretch of the A74 I had a HGV but it was only class 2 at the time he drove for a well known Shotley Bridge company my mate also drove for the same company he once let me tried to have a go at reversing but I ended up in a right pickle so that didn’t last long ( no damage done transporterman).
Sorry to hear about your illness hope you manage to keep going for a long time into the future and keep those stories about redmires etc. coming.
regards prattman.

Hiya,
Who was your stepbrother and your mate Prattman, I too drove an ERF artic for that
self same company in the 70s at the Shotley Bridge yard.

Hi Larry
My stepbrother was named Bill White he started on the tippers then went onto the artics I do not know how long he worked there but I know he went on for Norman Lewis the tanker people down Selby way he moved to Thirsk after meeting a women from there, he met her over the CB and far as I know he is still there we never close in fact I do not think he has seen his natural sister for years. The other person was my best mate for nearly twenty years Gordon Pullman (R.I.P.) ca’nt repeat his nickname on here but everybody will know it I fell out with him about ten years ago after he went out with my sister, through Gordon I met Bob Parker, little Willie, Bob English and a few others I cannot remember the names off, I also went to school with Paul Wheatley so knew he had gone to work there and have made contact again through Trucknet.
regards prattman.

Hi Prattman, your photo of RUP698 under the hopper was drove by Bill Reid and about 3 weeks before he was due to get 9305UP the new foden that you saw in the showfield,he pulled on the wrong side of the road to get into the Mart Yard, as you know it was a tight get in. Well a car come up the inside of him and Bill bumped it, Dryden Ward played hell with him and started on about him getting the new wagon, but Bill said if thats how you feel give the new foden to some one else i,l keep my old one. After that everyone had to pull in and out from the Stanhope direction but Bill still got the new one. The same motor RUP698 was later driven by Geordie Cook and he was parked up loaded having his bait in Newlandside Quarry when Ronnie White pulled along side of him.Ronnie said to Geordie do you realise your 2 back wheels are back there, Geordie thought he was winding him up but he wasnt, he hadnt been checking he,s wheel nuts and had been running with them loose. Instant dismissal.

Aye Kev it was a hell of a good turnout for Barry, Sorry I didn’t have time to have a bit crack with you, I had to get back home to pick my good lady up & take her to Windermere for a long weekend, Which did her a world of good, Mind she didn’t like the return run over Shap Fell today as it was snowing, I just said to her if you haven’t been on Shap when its snowing you’ve never lived my dear, Just remember I did it for years earning the money the keeps you in the life style you enjoy, She just frowned at me, So I said well I will take you again in the summer just to keep you happy, Ha Ha, Regards Larry.
