Old North East haulage companies (Part 1)

todays coming and goings at No 1 industrial estate, firstly long established scrap dealer from Delves Lane Lister scrap metals then Yearsleys going to his next drop, a couple of local firm Elddis Transport then a six- legger going to exchange bodies followed by a mix of 8-legger tippers heading towards Consett and Denhams and MGL then heading back for another load lastly another local operator Colin Willis with two Scania’s going to load up one returning loaded looks like a light load. regards prattman.

continued

A few late additions a Renault belonging to Teeside operator Devereux, then a bulker belonging to EMR, a Nampak Merc leaving with another load of plastic bottles rumour has it that the factory is closing in the near future next is Corners 8-legger Scania delivering to the farm where I used to park my truck then we have another MGL tipper delivering most likely his last load into Consett. The last photo I took as a bit of fun the police van had spent about an hour earlier at the farm when I uploaded the photo onto the computer I could swear he was looking in my direction, have not had any knocks on the door yet!.
regards prattman.

Hi Gary how are you doing? Hope your getting better. Garry

Have done some work for Nampac yep they are closing losing the Lockerbie contract in feb then they winding down some more as it is moving to Newport Pagnall as they are losing money & they need the work there

The 1 in Consett is making money & productivity is high 98% where as Newport dont have the same amount of work & there productivity is about 58% so they moving ops down to there in the coming year

Hiya,
When travelling by bus to Newcastle a couple of days ago as we passed
the old Pickfords heavy haulage yard at Birtley there was quite a
number of the Downton Transport Co trailers and several tractor units
parked in there, just wondering have they opened a new depot up this
way, it did look quite tidy I think all the trailers were curtainsiders is it
just a changeover point or have they got some traffic from the area ■■.
thanks harry, long retired.

Hi Garry
Thanks for asking about my current conditions at this moment in time I am halfway through having some radiation treatment two down three to go this is on top of ten sessions at had when I was at the Freeman Hospital back in october after this treatment has ended they will decide if I need further treatment which will most likely be chemotherphy.
I spend most of the day in the house but try weather permitting to go for a daily walk, later today we are going to collect the car from Newcastle where it has been in for a minor problem after that we are going to Costco and then onto Gala Bingo so I will be quite active today.
The firm I work for have kept my job open so here’s hoping I will be fit enough in the future to return, at Christmas time they gave me a big food hamper and a big bottle of Bailey’s which went to the wife as I only drink beer or lager, I had a pint of Stella the other day when we went for a meal that is the first pint I have had since my operation in August. Cheers Gary.

Hiya,
Well Garry I’ve had a lift in this motor with this driver from Moorside to Cooky’s
yard on a couple of occasions as my lift to work, I lived at Moorside for years It
was strange Salky’s just seemed to vanish overnight, they did save a few bob in
bus fares over the years when the missus wanted the car.

Great photos Jim, Brings back the past eh, Regards Larry.

Ive just heard that Barry Gibson has passed away, He was one of J.R.Adams long serving drivers, Nice lad, RIP Barry, Regards Larry.

Hullo,
Just as a point of interest, I was wondering whether any of you gentlemen may remember an old acquaintance of mine. The last time I saw him I met him and his family for a pot of Tea and a few cakes at Washington Services (South Side, on my way home to good old North Yorkshire) about 1994.
He was for a few years on the Continent, running mostly to Italy. He was known by all as Geordie Mick, Mick Leightley. A few people have asked me if I have seen him, I haven’t, so I wonder if anyone here has.
Cheers, Archie.

R.I.P.Barry, I first met him at the old “Red House” in the early 70’s when he drove a fridge motor on hanging beef. I know he’d had
health problems over the years. A quiet spoken gentleman. Let me know the funeral details please Larry. Regards Kev.
