Hi Bumper, Northumbrian Roadways, That’s a blast from the past, They had a depot a Dunston that eneded up belonging to Peter Corbet (Freeways Transport), I worked for T.T.Walker for a couple of weeks in 1968, I couldn’t get away quick enough , Their set up didn’t suit me at all but I shant say anymore about them as they were a long established firm, But certainly not for me, Regards Larry.
Is there anybody out there who recognises themselves in the following photo’s taken at Witton Castle truck show late 80’s-early 90’s.
regards prattman.
Cheers Gary!
Can anyone remember the companies that loaded coke at team valley in the 70s. I loaded there for Northern Ireland Trailers in the 70s. N.I.T. had an open top 30 ft. container usually mounted on a rear steer tri-axle trailer.Remember the local tipper drivers where very good when my weight was short they would let me jump the queue to get another ton or so on.Mind you they thought it was funny watching me in and out of the cab trying to get the rear axle lined up to get the pin in so i could reverse. It was foundry coke for belfast via preston i loaded quite regularly, used to remember the companies at the plant ,cant anymore.regards
That would have been Norwood coke works. It’s a housing estate now.
It was closed early eighties and when the ovens were demolished we led most of the ■■■■■■■■■ up to a shaft at at Dipton. It was then used for part of the Gateshead Garden Festival and subsequently built on.
We had a couple of six wheelers with fold down greedy boards and sometimes would sub to John Page from Blackhill ( blue Bedfords )leading the six inch coke, IIRC to a stock heap next to the Monkton coke works.
Cheers Tyneside

Thanks for your info Tyneside, its a shame all the places we knew are long gone, remember burning my fingers a few times chucking off hot coke when overweight, the weigh bridge man was very strict with me,think he liked watching me drop the trailer every time.burnt my fingers a few times chucking hot coke off when over weight.Would think you and other regulars could judge it better than me, they used to say sometimes there was more water in it.Still used to like coming up there, cant remember just where it was but used to park in gateshead on land that had been houses ,there where still terraced houses around the site, kids used to swing on the mirrors shouting “watch yer wagon mister” .good days life was simpler then.
best wishes ardennes
Smiles for Miles used to take coke from there down to Melton Mobray in the 60s with their 8 wheeler Akis, Also Black Bull Transport from Lanchester It was a regular job in those good old days when there was plenty of work about, Regards Larry.

hi there LD
when I used to stop at the clock café at scotch corner (seems a long time ago) I remember blue tk bedfords & dodges of eric dews from burnopfield with the highest greedy boards ever running south with big coke on,also talking to one of there drivers and he had a Bedford 8 wheeler built by themselves.
regards
SM1
The 8 wheeler Bedford was an ex Taits from Haydon Bridge I believe, Eric & his brother Kai converted the body for the coke job as far as I know, Regards Larry.

Hi Lawrence, did you load the baler twine out of Red Star at Sunderland where a young driver hardly dare look or speak to the lassies who worked there in case they took it as an invitation to take his breeks off and various other perversions.
Cheers. Leyland 600.
