Old North East haulage companies (Part 1)

Any one remember, Thomas Tench, from Winlaton with the old brown tar tankers, most of them commer ts3,s and a couple of Leyland comets and a few AEC eight wheelers, then he sold out to Rankins when they opened their new depot on Chain Bridge Road at Blaydon.

The Border Trafice Service Daf can any one remember or have a picture of the Merc sk in the river :open_mouth:  at Berwick and the
driver was on the roof of the cab think it was in the Evnin Chronicle at the time.

Ive just attended a funeral of a driver who worked for us for 9 years, A great bloke, he was as honest as the day, He gave us his best, RIP Walter, This was one of the motors he drove, Regards Larry.

He also drove this one from new,Regards Larry.

Here’s a few photo’s of a heavy haulage move by Econofreight travelling through Consett down towards Chester-Le-Street many years ago and one of Johnson’s with a similar load on the A68 at Kiln Pit Hill and lastly one of Pickfords on the A167 at Croxdale. regards prattman.

hiya,
Does anybody remember a firm called Taxifreight who operated out of the
North East little things red and yellow if my memory still works can’t recall
what they ran, do remember one overtaking me around Scotch Corner one
morning and I remember a wisp of smoke coming from the sheeted load I
did give a blast on the horn and loads of headlight but he was gone I pulled
into the next layby for a “jimmy riddle” and a swig from my flask just to
get me to Normans for Breakfast wasn’t stopped very long and away I went
to become halted in the area of the “long wall” and a slow crawl for about
a mile the cause was the burnt out shell of Taxifreight and the driver was
standing down the layby bag in hand, the initial smoke was more likely from
a discarded cigarette end from the upper deck of a bus possibly before he
got out of Tyneside, the load must have been pretty inflammable though.
thanks harry, long retired.

Just been on a website about Team Valley Trading Estate and it says that the first firm to officially move into a factory there was Orrell & Brewster on 19th October 1937. Are they still running, and if so where from. Can’t remember any pics or stories about them on here.

O&B finished in the late 70’s/early 80’s, the garage was on Hawks Rd Gateshead. The premises were then occupied by CPS Transport, (next door to the tyre place) Its now been redeveloped as part of Gateshead College. Regards Kevmac47.

They also had a depot at the top of Byker Bank in 1932, J.W.Capstaff Ltd had it after them Before they moved over to T,V,T,E, And had The Highway Drivers Hotel, I think Brown Wharrier had it after that, ■■?< Regards Larry.

O&B ran a lot of AECs, in the 50/60s days, They did a lot of Thos Hedleys (P&G) work they had some vans on hire to them at Leeds, The also did Petfoods from Melton & Castrol from Stanlow, I know of two of their old drivers who are still about Jimmy Ruff he drove an 8 wheeler AEC KCN 18, and Tommy Dimmick who was a local shunter, Regards Larry.

Surely there most be someone on here that remembers a bit about O&B, I can remember a lot of their drivers, Matty Carter drove JCN 44, Dicky Bolam KCN 18 before Jimmy Ruff, LCN 51 Ray Watson then Joe Macallister MCN 48 Dicky Bolam, NCN 94, Tommy Ions, They also ran S Type Bedfords & Thames Traders, Another name comes to mind the yard forman Poison Bob, & Albert another shunter, The traffic manager was Fred Hillier in those long gone happy days, Regards Larry.

I may be wrong but I.m sure my old man told me John crow was transport manager for o and b when he drove for them just after the war

Billy Urwin one of our livestock drivers from Springwell Village had a brother, I think called George or Joe who was with O&B till they finished.
I can remember their yard on Hawks Road as it was opposite Johnson & Watson’s slaughter house.

Didn’t “young” Johnny Brewster end up with a place at Dunston doing engine overhauls etc. ■■?

Yes he did, Old Jonny Brewster had a place in Brunnel Street Scotswood Rd, He then moved to Dunston & his son worked there, Its now owned by Bodyline who do repairs & re-sprays as far as I know, Regards Larry.

I was talking to a work colleague today he lives at Seahouses in Northumberland which is a canny distance from our depot at Chester-Le-Street and he was asking me if I had always been a driver (most of the time I have but I have done other jobs away from driving) when he mentioned his grandfather and great grandfather were involved in transport, this lads surname is McPhee and his grandfather owned McPhees in Newcastle
I remember a classmate at school who’s father drove for McPhees this lads surname was Eglon and he lived at Ebchester and I can remember seeing his dads lorry parked there occasionally there was also one that parked at Leadgate I once took some photo’s of this lorry which was a Scania but they did not work out more’s the pity.regards prattman.
