Gladly no, I worked for Alex Smiles (RIP) for 10 years. I remember when Blenky was busy setting up a mini skip hire business with skips he’d “borrowed” from Smilsey’s compound. Mind you I think all these scrap men were the same, not happy unless they were pulling a fast one on somebody. Alex’s favourite was to mix mill scale in with the turnings, then when the load got knocked a couple of ton it was the drivers fault. I once got sent to Liverpool with a load like that and they put it all back on me and rejected the lot. When I rang the office Alex told me to take it to another place on Liverpool docks and luckily they were just about to knock off for dinner so the checker signed my ticket and told me to tip it then disappeared for his bait, so I got away with it. Needless to say I never got a thanks or anything for getting shot of it.

High N S Bri, Did you ever come accross a driver at the Late Alex Smiles firm called Derek Jonhston ■■?, Regards Larry.

Hi Mark,
I’m going to take a guess that the driver of the blinged up 110 was a YOUNG Ray Hare.

Wrong that motor was driven by Jimmy Shepard,Steves father.)Photographed across the road from his house,as in those days most of the drivers took their motors home at a weekend.

Great Photos of an old firm , I went to college with Bernard Hare in the earley 50s Skerrys in Newcastle I used to get a lift in twice a week from Seaton Burn where I lived in those days in a O Model petrol Bedford, Thats when P & H did their carrier service & parked in Newcastle,s Morden Street for their return parcel traffic, They are the days of my life I will never forget, When I started driving wagons I met up with Bernard a few times when he driving an S Type 4 wheel Bedford, he used to deliver to Baxters Warehouse on the Milk Market sometimes in the 50/60s era, & In later years we picked one of their trailers up & delivered the load to Falkirk loaded with concrete pipes from Howick, Happy enjoyable long gone days, Regards Larry.

4 and 5 nights a week across the bonnet no night heater, most old timers have either tinnitus with the noise in the cab,or deafness along with worn out hip and knee joints.NOW they are the boys I would call knights of the road.

Hello B series,
Can remember loading and tipping at a few places and parking up with a Pentleton and Hare driver called Joe Lamb [RIP] who drove a Bedford KM artic with a short trailer on,he was a hard worker and would always give you a hand with your ropes and sheets as most drivers did in them days.
At the time i was driving a Guy Warrior 8w for Fergusons.

Regards

F Troop.

I think Feather and Kent finished on the Quayside in about 1970. Don’t remember the traffic manager’s name but he was known as “Snuffy Norman”.
