Old North East haulage companies (Part 1)

Talking of Coachbuilt cabs, can anyone remember the place on the left corner at the Four Lane Ends before you head down the bank to Longbenton, it had a sign outside shaped like a lorry (of the Fifties period). I always wanted to go inside for look as a laddie, somebody might recall the name, the sign was there for quite sometime. Franky.

Hi The cab was built by Pilot.
The Scammell Auto coupling which is heavier than the one used by British Rail Scarab which was rated at 3ton.

hiya,
I used to drive an Albion LAD cabbed job Scammell coupler but also piped for
a fifth wheel coupling this would have been 65/66, there was an overlay to
enable it to pull tandem trailers, there was an old trailer in the yard where
I could leave the overlay hanging if I needed to use one of the Scammell one
axle trailers I hasten to add the firm I was working for only carried capacity
loads outbound but have overloaded the old girl a bit on return load traffic it
was quite a versatile little motor though and a bit of a novelty in those days,
I remember Jos Walsh another haulier used the same method on a couple of
old 5LW engined Atki’s now he did put some weight on them.
thanks harry, long retired.

Thanks for the info re Pilot. This was the same company that made tipping gear, I have only seen conventional style coachbuilt cabs from Pilot and had a brochure at one time, there is a Chieftain or Clydesdale preserved in J & E Transport livery also W.P.Bell & Sons at Wigton had one, they had a one piece full flat screen full width of the cab with no centre supporting pillar and conventional D shaped quarter windows. I have a photo of the J&E Albion somewhere.
Cheers,Leyland 600

Amazing how did you remember that sign ? You have just taken me back 50 years. I can remember that sign when I was a kid and it was Hartleys caravans and I am sure it had “coachworks” written on it somwhere. Used to pass it every day when my Mother dragged me to the shops, bet it was that sign that influenced a young boy to to drive trucks when he was a big lad…ha .

Hi crowbar,

i remember in the seventies and eighties at Thorn at Spennymoor they had three or four old trailers parked up and used for storage.which were automatic coupling. signwritten Atlas Lighting and ferguson TV (Old Thorn names). The transport manager who had been there since the fifties kept an old Thames Trader tractor with automatic coupling to use if ever they needed moving. Time went by and he retired. A university graduate with no working knowledge of transport was appointed and seeing the Thames Trader sent it for scrap (To keep the site tidy). Then came the problem, he had never heard of automatic coupling and they needed the trailers moving, and they couldn’t. It cost them a fortune to move them with cranes and low loaders and have them scrapped.

Carl

Here you are Harry, D,ye think you could still manage a little Chieftain like this. ■■
Photo taken at Dumfries Transport Group Road Run 2007. I think it might belong to Len Isherwood from Bacup.
Cheers Leyland 600.

Sorry got no pics but I remember Peacocks, used to run blue and pink 88s if I not mistook. Their yard was over the railway bridge then turn in right up a bumpy track. When I worked for Clarks Haulage in Sunderland we got one of Peacocks old 88s for spares and I nicked the blue sun visor for my motor.
