Here’s a photo of one I drove for a few weeks in 1973

Smith & Dixon thats a blast from the past, I used to have a drink with some of their lads when down the Smoke, A lot of drivers used to get into the Still & Star when we were parked up on the Hill area, Im sure they did a bit of London work out of Hendon Paper mill, Canny set of blokes, They used the word chore quite a lot, as where I came from it was Kidder, Regards Larry.

Yea, worked at Dixons when he called it a day about 1978. Dixon went to work for Clarkie and got me a start there. I then went to Les Sampsons on the docks, then Vaux on holiday relief then Van Hee for a couple of year. Then on for John Kerss on the containers. Next up was Alex Smiles on the scrap tippers for ten year, then on for a cowboy called Geoff Austin from Ferryhill. When running on red and kerra got too much and he owed me wages I left and completed the circle by going on for Fergies in Sunderlandand put 8 years in there.
By the way Jeff did you have any luck in your request about that Up North programme about Glennys transporter? I sent a pm to a lad about where to see it but I had no reply.

The Smith and Dixon mob would load from Domtar at Grangetown, Sunderland, Liners at Gateshead and others, the load in my photo was from Domtar, drops in London and south coast then up to Reeds paper mill at Aylesford, Kent to re load stopping sometimes going down or up at I believe some waste ground off Mansell street, London, having a wash in the toilets at the Tower of London, then out for a drink but I can not remember the pubs apart from the watneys red barrel signs, I do remember the Bricklayers arms parked up at Reeds mill. The boss was a funny old bugger Ray Dixon, really I liked his humour.

There’s a little article about a Smith and Dixon driver in the latest Heritage Commercial mag and the Seddons he drove for them, anyone on here! He seemed to like them and although some others didn’t they weren’t too bad a motor for the time, the 354 Perkins could be a bit noisy but most engines were then and they done plenty of graft for a cheap motor. Franky.

Jeff, I have seen it on the Transport drivers facebook page. There is 10 minutes of coverage but Ken says there is quite a bit more of it to come which I have not seen yet.
It shows good footage of old NE companies that have been forgotten and it brings back fond memories of Normans and the Quernow.

Thanks very much for that larry.I don’t write much on the site but it is very good reading. cheers Brian.
