Old Firms in Oxford Area

Just Googled that site & looks like it’s on the old LMS line out of Rewley road, is that right Nathan? I remember you put photos on this thread when you were running into site before the silos were demolished. Would they have to remove contamination from there before building new station?

It is the old Oxford-Cambridge line George. The new Oxford Parkway station building is being built on the site of the old Amey depot, the new car park is going where the silo stood. I don’t think there is contamination as Earthline and Einigs are doing the muckshift, running to their own tips.
The Hanson siding is still accessed via the old entrance but in the next month or so those entering the sidings will use the Water Eaton Park and Ride entrance.
Very strange to see a new station built with a goods yard I must say.

Yeah, that’s the one, worked that a few times, but only as far as Bletchley at the level I was at. I remember taking a new driver on there once, who wasn’t too familiar with the road, (signals) but I was feeling confident, as you are at 17 years old! It was in the second half of the '50’s then, but there were still ex LMS men who stayed working that line & their engines only, although off the old GWR shed.

Fun and games in Hansons at Kidlington. I drive into an empty yard onto the weighbridge, weighbridge/shovel driver sat in office says “You’ll have to wait while I grease the shovel.” I asked if I could drive on down and wait only to be told “no because I haven’t tared you in.” 20 mins later he’s still not started greasing, but the making the changing of grease cartridges look so difficult he should get an Oscar.
I find it hilarious he’s going to such lengths, not sure the Hanson drivers behind me do though. It must be nice to have a lazy militant ■■■■■■ governing your truck earnings.
Hanson franchise anyone?

No prizes for guessing who used to run this.

Any info on Charles Woods Chris, think you might have said before, but I can’t remember. I used to see them about, but hadn’t a clue at all about them! Looks like someone was keen on that outfit, with the Reg. Number & all! looks a bit of a wind jammer though! I bought an '84 2100, it was a drop side, but the dealer agreed to put a curtain side body on for me. When I went to pick it up I was amazed how big it was & of course it didn’t push along too well. I had to fit a deflector on top of the cab which made a bit of difference & looked a bit more complete as well, but was a heavy old motor! :frowning:

Hi BigG, Woods used to mainly do local & middle-distance Removals, and we on Luker Bros did the longer UK stuff & European, hard work with as many drops as they could squeeze on, but a good bunch of lads & some great laughs  . Then Woods decided they wanted a bit of that action & started buying some smarter kit like the 1 pictured, a few of the Luker lads even ended up working for Woods too! Regards Chris

BigG AND Chris , Woods no longer do abroad now ,so there trailers are now laid up , they do the same crap as me now  , if you look there motors are not modern and nice any more , they use to be spot on but not no more .

Give me a call Chris , maybe a trip to Rush green the weekend after this one , im only taking the Vito so what ever you buy will have to fit in that !

As the art mistress said to the gardener ‘my word, that’s a big one!’

Hi Chris, my only gripe with it is it’s not a european style Volvo seat eg: it does’nt drop down when you get out without pressing the red deflate switch otherwise Volvo I-shift 12 auto box and can you believe a 750000 mile warranty on the box, enough room to walk about in the back and separate in cab heating and air-con so you can run it all night hot or cold without the engine. Oh and they still have the stupid american push pull tractor and trailer park brake buttons.
