Old Firms in Oxford Area

Hi Chris, yes I do remember one of the forklift drivers knocking into the racking and bringing down several aisles, there was Bud running out of the doors and I collected out of Kingswinford quite a few times, I had one of the 113 Scania 6 leggers on a regular basis as I was in Bibby’s for about six months. I did like doing 2 collections a day out of the brewery at Mortlake, down for breakfast and back again for lunch, always plenty of hours to be had on there, your right it was Jackie the planner, nice girl always ok to get on with, but the place was so chaotic that you could be sat there for hours waiting to be loaded before you went out on your run. What was the name of the manager who came down from Kingswinford along with a couple of their drivers, I think one was called Steve.
Regards Charlie.

Hi Charlie,
They reckoned the stacker driver only clipped the corner of the racking, but they had used the wrong bolts to secure it all, so that was enough to trigger a domino effect & down it came :open_mouth:  . The manager from Kinswinford? I know exactly who you mean, I can picture him but his name has gone, he was a bit anti us when he 1st came down, but he was fine once he could see you could do the job, the drivers that came down didn’t stop long, I think they thought they were gona get special treatment & pick & choose their work, but when they realised they weren’t they cleared off! Double-Stag, what a walk in the park that was  , my Mrs could have done that, as you say you tried to work the runs round the canteen times   . We got our monthly Bud allowance as well, some months it was just a couple of cases, other months it could be up th 6 cases  , then you could buy it dirt cheap sometimes, I bought a whole pallet once, got it fork-lifted into the back of my Landy Discovery, I’d sold the lot inside 24 hrs at a nice little profit
Regards Chris

Muckaway:
I was told today, that McArdle have taken all the Euro 4 and 5 McKenna wagons and sent them to London depots; Trouble is, the McKenna men have now got the cast offs…with a promise they wont be laid off for 2 years.

Oh what a treat for them to have those wagons, they must be chuffed to bits :unamused: . the way some of those London tipper boys chuck their wagons about… :open_mouth: . I hope the promise holds true, but a promise from todays modern management… :unamused: :unamused:

New Hydrogen trailers gona be coming from AP Holland into Didcot regularly now. Trailer’s cost £1 million each :open_mouth:

I gota be honest, they look a bit futuristic but I like the look of them! One of the bottle-boys (gas-bottles) came into AP Didcot with 1 on demo last week, its a nice big imposing cab, the interior was nice with a well layed out dash, & he said it was a lovely dive!

I think it looks great from the front , but not so sure side on.
Bit low on front bumper and a lot of the old plastic !

Ah plastic :unamused: The truck manufactures best friend, light, easy to make into whatever you want, & also easy to break so they can sell you another part at an exorbitant price :imp: . As you say the one you have pictured is very low at the front, fit for long-haul fridge work etc on\off loading bays & motorway work! You’d have to make sure you spec’ your plastic well, cos I dread to think how much that spoiler would cost to replace :open_mouth:

Loving this thread, got a few pics of local companies
that was me driving the erf for john werrell

I remember from my childhood, must be when i was 10 or younger (20+ years ago) there used to be a Foden parked in our village with the slogan “suger & spice & all things nice” on the front of it, was white from what i remember. The driver used to love to use his air horns when we used to wave at him. Anyone recall it or the company? Must have been local due to it being parked in the village all the time

What is John Werrell running now that good used ERFs are not in abundance?

In a word…no.

Hi everyone, first time of writing. Ref John Werrell & Sons (Wekankaryit) all one firm as far as l know, the Wekan slogan just a gimic, would not be allowed now by modern so called transport management, would have to have the word LOGISTICS in there somewhere, & have to get rid of that beautifull traditional red paintwork & lettering so they could paint the cab white with 2 letters on the cab door that nobody new what they meant! Luckily they still going, got a couple of lovely ERF Olympics along with all their other ERFs, they are still piling on the coal!

The driver of this one retired yesterday after 38 years service…

I wish he’d wind his sheet that far in when I load him; Absolute pain in the arse to get shingle on that low trailer, made harder when I can’t get the bucket up behind the headboard. :imp: :imp:
That must be type 1 ex Huntsmans he’s carrying in that pic as I can assure you, with shingle on it looks a much bigger load.

Taken at Godstow Road, Wolvercote 1960, apparently for the Western Bypass construction. Would this be part of the old Wolvercote Flyover that was rebuilt a couple of years ago?

Remains of the John Allen Factory. It’s looking a bit neglected now and hardly visible from the road, but at least it is still there!
