Old Firms in Oxford Area

I did some muckshifting from Morrells when it was converted into flats. I see a link here; Greene King bought Morrells and closed it and sold off for flats…They bought Morlands too and guess what happened in Abingdon?

Had a few shut over the years,
The Railway Hotel shut must be 25 years ago
The Red Lion shut at least 20 years but Hooky Brewery bought it and extended The Sun into it.
The Bell is open but it was closed last year for 6 months but now reopened,
The Gate was closed over xmas but now reopened.
Writing all this down is very depressing!!!
The Horses still deliver to the local pubs.

The Railway Hotel did well considering the last passenger train stopped at Hooky in 1951. Did the landowner nextdoor ban all the regulars? The old station is well known for not liking railway photographers; My mate was politely told to move on and he only stopped to photograph the hotel and station entrance.
Talking of which, the tunnel’s been forced open near the viaducts…maybe our scrap collecting friends believed the Thomas the tank story about a naughty engine being bricked up in a tunnel?

David Einig Contracting; A firm that seems to have suddenly sprung up and now run the red and black tippers running about Oxford (ex Barton Plant). Einigs’ machines are working at the recycling depot near Benson and at Agriverts at Cassington.

Looks like the wee man was having a good “butchers” at the oncoming traffic,I see he’s got his left leg on the anchor pedal, probably not too sure about the “engine” or wether it will surge or just set off smoothly!!!Nice shot though Nathan,I’m sure he is the “apple of his old mans eye” ! Cheers Dennis.

Meeks of Luton is A E Meek.Light blue volvos with yellow lettering. Not sure if they are still in business though. Were based just behind the Vauxhall parts warehouse that can be seen from M1 just North of J11

Field transport own Meeks now, there’s a few trucks in there and trailer

Wally Cross News: The Hanson liveried Scanias’ cab is too tall to drive under the asphalt plant at Sutton Courtenay, and has to break h&s rules by backing under.
The Hanson liveried Volvo FMX is heavy, but bloody fast!

She’s a Beast! Got to be an ex-tipper? or possibly ex-military, seen a few like that with flat-bed/de-mounts on, pulling for Queen & Country! The only bit I don’t like is that horrible front grill design, boring & lacking in imagination :frowning: & no Foden ever looks right to me without the kite on the front!
Regards Chris

The kite came back not long after I believe, although during this period Smiths always had the kite proudly flying!

Hi Nathan , that foden of Harry and Billy hebborns was a tractor unit with a very large heavy duty hiab crane ,I think its got a ■■■■■■■ or cat in , but its not a Gardner , im sure of that because Harry was chomping on about it being very fast .

Just seen this on Bubblemans’ Scrapbook;

Eddie Harrisons’ looking down right now saying “not as good as them '88s”

If “4425” is correct, Steve I’d go with ■■■■■■■■ I’ve noticed Cats seem to be “4300,4350” etc where’s ■■■■■■■ go up in 5s. Don’t take it as gospel though…

sorrry no kite on front chris

My old ■■■■■■■ was a 275 and Dads’ was a 325; He did have a 220 in the '80s so theory might just apply to larger engines??
