Old Firms in Oxford Area

My sentiment exactly mate! Each to their own of course, but I can’t see how you could look at them as a serious work horse! :open_mouth: Much too showy. Wonder what Dennis thinks!

The rates must have really improved, George :unamused:

One from Bubb’s Scrapbook Thread, a bit of a beast I would have thought & wouldn’t have been too common to see a six wheeler on that job would it?

Talking of local breweries, what did people think of Morrells and Morlands beers? Many I’ve spoken too thought they were awful with Halls even worse. Clinches of Witney seemed to be popular: A tale I’ve heard from several former Hailey residents is that following Courages takeover of Clinches and their decision to axe Clinchs’ brews, a rep went to the Carpenters Arms at Hailey to ask what the regulars wanted. “Courage to drink your stuff!” Was the answer from one old timer!

Whilst on the important subject of beer, the heir to Courages’ was killed F1 racing; Piers Courage crashed an early Williams designed car at the 1970 Dutch GP, after a suspension failure sent up a grass bank into trees and exploded. Magnesium chassis +fire+ water…Not good.

There isn’t a decent pint brewed south of Brum, the chalky water is ■■■■ willy !! Plus if you had decent Ale south of Brum you’d always be fighting 'cause you can’t hold it!! Cheers Anon1.

I like the Witney Guinness (Hobgoblin), Dennis. Used to drink a lot of Newcastles’ finest while my mates drank tart fuel

Just thought; Marstons’ own Wychwood Brewery now anyway; If our water was good enough for helping bleach our blankets, it’s good enough for wheeltappers and shunters clubs, Dennis.

Up here in the Norff Nathan there was always the argument that Tetleys bitter brewed in Leeds was far better than the bitter brewed in their Warrington brewery ! never could discern which was better,I was always ■■■■■■ at “make your mind up time” !! Cheers Dennis.

Morlands (Abingdon) and Morrells (Oxford) both had their diehards who wouldn’t drink the others’ beer; It all came from the Thames, and tasted like it too…Or was it the paint from the Morris works at Cowley and Abingdon?

It was always reckoned that if you drunk a glass of tap water in London Nathan that 6 people had drunk the same glassfull before you !!! If you held the glass up to the light you could see all kinds of things squirming around !!! At least we get our water out of Thirlmere and Haweswater and it’s crystal clear and tastes 'bootiful, although there is no doubt a dead sheep or so floating about now and again but it probably helps the taste !! Cheers Dennis.

How about this old bedford , this was a old removal firm now long gone , they also did lots of theatre work and when i was on long distance I often see there old TK going north to scotland , they only had a couple of trucks and when they had a lorry off the road , they use to borrow one of my dads Commers or a Dodge .The picture i think is out side Allsouls college on Queens lane .

Keep out of Stephen Road, Headington Jakey; We do a load of crushed concrete a day into that Birch site down there. Normally they have it early so I do it but they’ve got obe on for lunchtime today with our driver whos’ directions must include “pull off weighbridge”

My dad was a Morrells man, but I didn’t reckon much to it! Clinches was ok though, but I think you could get used to most of the proper ales! I liked a pint of Flowers at one time too, but when I moved up to the Midlands I thought Bank’s took a bit of beating. :sunglasses: I don’t bother much at all now and I reckon it’s just as well with all that foreign sterilised muck they push at ya! Trouble is if you find somewhere still doing proper stuff, more often than not, they don’t keep it right! Mind you, we have got a couple of local micro breweries down here, so all is not lost.

It’s actually a local builder who thought we had “half a load on.”

Talking of Clinches, they were also bankers in Witney. They married into the Earlys who were married into the Marriotts (coal merchants and weavers). I read a book about the Witney Railway and it listed it’s directors; Then read a couple of local history books and found the board were all related.
Two Early brothers both topped themselves; One took the boring way of shooting himself, the other was more original and drowned himself in a barrel…Must be the beer

Talking of Oxfordshire brews we can get Hobgoblin (bottled) and Old Speckled Hen on draught over here on the USA west coast but unfortunately no Hooky…

When I was on for Flitwick Oil (Esso) at the old Oxpens Depot in Oxford we used to take oil just round the corner into Morrells. When you had filled the tank you went in to get a signature, when you came back out & opened your door there was always a couple of bottles of bitter layed on your drivers seat  . We never knew who put them there but it always happened, my kinda drop, if you parden the pun!
