Old Firms in Oxford Area

Talking of Tuckwells, respect to them for keeping their old Mercs going: R and L reg SK mixer and Hiab, R reg Actros unit and Y reg 8 legger tipper plus 2 X reg Atego tippers (3rd one being cannibalised). They’ve got some Atego mixers pushing 10 years old and an 05 Axor 6w mixer. I thought that must be a rare one for that reg?

B buckingham & Sons  Don’t they run a blue Scania Topline pulling a livestock trailer that I see about quite often :bulb: Allens have been gone a while now haven’t they, unless they are running round in different colours.

Regards Chris

Hi aussie expat,
Don’t remember the white 113, but prob’ saw it around sometime! The blue Scania Topline was parked outside the Scania workshops in Abingdon the other day when I took mine round there for service, it has Buckinham writen above the windscreen, as I say it has a livestock trailer on, is that what you pulled when on there
Nothing on the cab from what I can remember to say where it’s from
Regards Chris

Brian Buckingham’s got 3 (I think) Scanias pulling livestock trailers now. He had an N reg blue 143 until a couple of years ago. He did pull one of Mutchmeats trailers occasionally. Expat, was the one you drove a wagon and drag? I remember one of Brians’ weighing at Gill Mill on occasions.
Allens finished about 5 years ago; Used to collect bagged aggregate from Gill Mill and take to John Nicholls at Banbury.

Oh believe me Nathan the old man new what his right boot was for

Talking of right feet, Earthline are back in Bunkers Hill cement works. Apparently a London firm intend to put a large recycling plant in there. I wonder if they can recycle the asbestos that was put in there when the cement works railway and coking plant was buried??

Masks & goggles on, & keep the lid on the lunch box when clearing that site then :open_mouth:

It’s going to be filled…eventually. Blue Circle worked it for years and with all the recycling, it’ll take many more to fill.

Is that the one near Kirtlington Nathan? 'Cos I used to cart cement out of there on one of Tuckwells A series Bedfords and run it down to Bradleys at South Cerney. Lovely little job, although a bit dusty! … D’ya know, I think I’ve told you that before! Another senior moment me thinks!

That’s the one, George. Tuckwells did the same out Chinnor cement works (Rugby Cement). Blue Circle had backup stone pits at Ardley and one near Gaydon. A good firm to work for so I’m told.

Hi Chris.
That indeed does take me right back,on BRS oxford with your dad early 50s. he had an ex ground nuts Albion and drag and yes he had a good right foot when required ,33 mph max in that , I remember us both leaving for Liverpool with indentical loads (cased cars) but i had a seddon artic ,when i got to the dock Charlie had tipped and waited ,and then helped to unrope and sheet me and managed to unload in time -that was how we worked together those days!

Regarding the speeding well it was hardly reckless with 20 mph plates but fines were heavy --i had one ‘exceeding 20 mph in a heavy motor vehicle’ fined £10 at chippenham–when you consider a weekly wage was around £12 week imagine today almost a weeks wages lost £400 ? for that offence. We were able to get re-imbursed though by the TGWU by claiming " distress" payment and going to the union office in Cowley road with our shop steward!!! Happy days though .i loved my time with BRS
