Old Firms in Oxford Area

Great site with some cracking photo’s
Does anyone remember Chris Stringer used to run tippers from cowley and later from Horton ■■■ Studley, his late wife used to train dogs at Oxford Stadium
Also Shepherds from Forest Hill
Regards

Hi ROUTEMAN 67 welcome to the site and glad you like it. What sort of time period are you referring to, only I knew of a Stringer family when I was a young 'un, so maybe a link there somewhere. I bet butlerboy might know, but he is another that has got out of the habit of posting! :frowning: I will ask him though. Anyway, I hope you will contribute to the thread as you get settled in, and find great pleasure in taking part. Cheers for now. Big G.

Hi Big G, Would of been 80’s - 00’s went under the name of Cascos in later years, blue and white livery specialised in road plainings

Hi Routeman67, I remember Cascos running late ‘90s to early 2000s. When I drove plant for Sheehans based at their recycling plant at Slape Hill near Woodstock, Cascos would tip planings in there, and do general haulage for Sheehans when planing was quiet. I remember 2 women driving for them, Rose and Nancy. Rose had a Renault Maxter with an auto tailgate, I think Cascos also had some 3 series Scanias. Associated Asphalt were a major customer of them I think.
There was also a driver called Jake, who drove for Smiths for a while when Cascos finished.
On the subject of plant, anyone recall the infamous John Barney; did demolition, plant and ran Woodeaton Quarry near Islip?
I found some, er, “interesting” waste when Sheehans’ did some stabilising work at Woodeaton for a later owner of the by then redundant quarry and tip. Incidently, McKennas are trying to reopen the pit for recycling and inert tipping…

HI Routeman 67, Sheherds of Forrest Hill I know them well, worked with Gordon Shepherd at British Leyland Transport Dept, Cowley in the early 80s just before he started his own firm up, took my Class 3 Course with his daughter Greta, lovely girl to share a cab with

Local tipper operator Andy Crockett had one of his tippers go over while tipping clay at Sheehans’ Slape Hill quarry last week; It was an ex Hanson Foden (T reg, his first motor). Driver ok, but apparently the body ripped clean out of the hinges at the rear :open_mouth:

I think Veron Freight took over the contracts when they finished but might be wrong on that

Hi Muckaway
I’ve seen some photos on a mates phone and by all accounts the body fell off the lorry and was lucky it didnt take the truck over with it (bit of a white knukle ride for the driver there)
The ram looked like a vandalised car arial from the old days

I know andy he use to work for you Muckaway , and that t reg foden was not Dicks normal motor , I think thats Andys usual drive .Did you ask Dave Curry ■■? , also I remember Greta .

Not sure who took over the work to be honest, I didn’t see Gordon for quite a while during the time he was selling up cos I was away so much, he lives in Cowley now, apparently Greta still lives at Forrest Hill & has a couple of kiddies!
Regards Chris

Saw this for sale on ebay , now they had a good fleet in Thame .

Hi Steve, Bennett’s had a very mixed fleet too, but a lot of British in Sed-Atki’s, Leyland Buffalo’s with Sleepers!!!, don’t remember them having any Marathon’s but they did run quite a few T45 Roadtrains, ran some early F88s & a few Foden’s too. Quite a plain paint job really but smart, their flats/rope & sheet always looked good. We used to take Unipart spares etc out to them from 733 Warehouse, (wish I had a £ for every hour I spent up there learning how to load trailers, sweeping off trailer beds, shunting trailers in/out the with Pete Crump’s old 500 Buffalo shunter, & the most important job any apprentice has to learn, MAKING THE TEA!) Regards Chris

Yes Chris , they are had a fine fleet , I liked there Roadtrains a lot and they alllways had a ■■■■■■■ engine .

Must have been back in the 80s, TRUCK magazine did a article on how to Rope & Sheet, it was a Bennett Rodtrain they used with one of their longest serving drivers doing it, good job when it was done, he new what he was doing!

Our latest new toy, I took her out for her first 2 days to make sure she was OK, now Bob has got her, he’s 63ish (he’s a bit cagey about that!) so she will see him through to retirement!

You can’t say “retirement”; someone at our place was told this when they said (xyz) wont get a new motor as they’re past retiring

thats nice Chris , that will do me

Got these off a driver on the habitat contract (wallingford) , the driver washing his truck is ■■■■ comley truck was f186jtv and the second wagon was Andy frasers then passing to Dave mace .
These daf 2500 were ok and I remeber the drivers coming in at the week end they got them to fit cbs etc .
My first truck was f183 jtv a well worn drawbar which camd from Wellingbrough depot and was a bit rough but after three hard weeks of cleaning fitting curtains and painting wheels etc she was ready to roll and look a decent truck .

this was Dicks truck , this was a rare occasion of him washing his truck .
