Some pictures of our coal lorries from mid 1980s to the present day, remember having regular deliveries of coal hauled by priors.
I maybe wrong I often am and the old memorys not so good, but Prentice Bicester rings a bell. Iām sure I have tipped coal there years ago when I was on for J&B. probably done through British Fuels.
Hi aeprentice1864, Is that the year the firm was started? Think I mentioned on here before about coal yards in railway goods yards and It sounds like your yard was one of these. Then when Brititsh Rail stopped delivering small loads they came by road. Great pics of your motors mate, I ran similar to those in the '80s/'90s, though I wasnāt operating in Oxford area, just running around there a lot. I remember getting my first D series motors and thinking what luxury they were compared to our Commers!! Was the removals a separate entity or just another string to the bow? Love to see any more pics. you may have.
Hi Andrew Morrison, Think itās got to be an āor whatā!! Great pics. of the wagons though, especially with the 'erberts on, nice to know a bit of history.
On the subject of coal merchants, does anyone remember Bovingtons? Had a yard in Aston and so Iāve been told, ran J types in later years. āBovingtonsā Yardā is now a small housing site near the war memorial, and several Bovington family members are commemorated on it.
BigG, you might remember them, they loaded their coal out of Brize Norton & Bampton Stationā¦
Ooo-er! Nathan, Iām stumped again! All I remember of Brize & Bampton station is the noise of them B47 or 52s, what ever number they were at that time, early mornings What a bloody racket!! Maybe if I saw a picture of one of their wagons, road or rail, it might flick a switch!
Well mate, apparently your Mum thought so, & so did the Alsation at No.53! Personally I always thought you looked better covered in Fly-Ash! Easy Tiger!!!

Really good condition for a mixer of this age; They use it most days when their Ategos are busy, and must be one of the last SKs as Tuckwells also have an R reg Actros artic unit (bought secondhand). They used to have their own wrecker aswell, and when I started on Smiths they ran an E reg FL7 8wheeler that was gutless along with some SK 4wheel tippers and a C reg SK 6wheel tipper that was actually a retired mixer. The body looked perched on top but itād make a nice sound pulling away loaded. Tuckwells also bought an F reg FL10 off a retiring J Curtis driver which surprised me as I used to hear rumours of how the two companies didnāt get onā¦
Companies donāt get on, people donāt get on, but business is business!! If someone has got something you want/need, then do the deal, slap hands load up & walk away! You aināt gota swap spit in the showers, life goes on!

Big G⦠one of Dines ex driver went on for Smiths around 78/79 Tony his name was, but i canāt recall his surname.
Could possibly have been Tony Dix?? He was famously overtaken by an old man on a bike going up Fullbrook Hill driving one of their Foden 8wheel Fleetmaster/Haulmasters (the splitscreen version)

Hi Muckaway ,
I believe Companies get on too well apart from some local rivalry, especially in the materials supply industry, despite many previous warnings and fines for price fixing over the last 40 years the O F T are now looking at the big boys once again ,The Directors of these Companies will get off again leaving the lesser (sales) staff to take the rap as has happend in the past as we well know, then carry on until the next time! ------- toshboy

Anyone remember the short-lived James Bull plant Hire? IIRC They tipped at Waterstock golf course mid '90s⦠Sheehans bought some of his machines after he ceased trading and McKennas bought some 3 series Scania tippers. Bulls were red with yellow signwriting.
Local demolition firm, Maylarch (operate a small fleet of MAN skip and roro wagons) have started demolition on the Star pub on Witney Road, Eynsham. Last Sunday I took several photos of it several days before demolition started (tipped off by Father in Law as he had to carry out some repairs to the 360 onsite before work could start), and I went back yesterday to take more photos towards the end of the demolition work;
The last 2 photos seem quite soberingā¦

Not another boozer gone! I need a drink now!!!
Iādve liked to have had the old Halls Brewery sign (the hare) off the wall but someone had it away a few weeks ago. Halls had a brewery behind Coopers old marmalade factory on Oxpens Road; Iāve heard their beer (and what was served in The Star) wasnāt upto muchā¦The Star had a refit into itās last form about 3 years ago and was closed for a few months then reopened shortly before being closed for about 12months upto demolition. I looked through a broken window about 3 weeks ago and there were still unwashed plates and glasses left over from the last night on the bar (I think the local rodents had a good knees up thoughā¦)
Donāt know if any of you local lads Muckaway/Jakey etc know of any good drivers out there that are loooking for a job or a change of employer, but we are taking on a new driver at my place if you know of anyone that might be interested!
Regards Chris
Anyone remember this firm having a depot in Oxford? Only I knew a chap who drove for them in the late '50s and did a bit of research to find something saying they were on the Cowley Road. I have no idea where that might have been, but would think they would have been supplied from the Stratford on Avon brewery. This picture is only a model, but I think the Oxford wagons would have been four wheeler flat drays in the main.
