I thought I’d wake up this thread with the news McKennas’ have been bought out by McArdle.

Running under the new name of McRaceabout.

Apparently, McKennas’ keeping the recycling site at Lower Road, Eynsham although the tip nextdoor is almost full so that’s staying. Their yard at Wheatley’s being rented to McArdle for a tidy sum and McKenna’s keeping Woodeaton Quarry near Islip for tipping. No McKenna employees can be laid off for 2 years (many will be retired by then!)

Woodeaton Quarry-remember John Barney operating that, anyone? When I worked for Sheehans’ I went on hire to Woodeatons’ then owner (it was mothballed) on a dumptruck moving soil to help stabilise the faces. Some interesting material dug up during the week or so I was there
McKenna’s still trying to get planning for Woodeaton, but local NIMBYS keep objecting; They don’t like the quarry, but don’t like the idea of lorries getting to it to fill it :unamused:

Was that the one that was at Hanborough Bus Museum?

Prior’s motor. Who is the sleeper?
oiltreader

Oh don’t tease me, who could possibly have wanted a Volvo F88 back then when you could have this!

The late Eddie Harrison refused to give up his F88, so much so Percy Prior had new drivers on new wagons. Roy Molloy was a fitter for Priors at Middle Barton; when they shut down he came on for Smiths and recently retired. He comes back 2 or 3 times a week to help out; a fantastic fitter, rebuilt the ■■■■■■■ motor in my first 6wheeler-better than new when it came back and never used oil.

my dad was also a fitter at priors kevin morris he also moved to smiths with roy malloy

I remember Kevin, used to do the routine servicing  Tell him Nathan sends his regards. Roy Molloy is one hell of a mechanic.

Have you got any pics of any of McKenna’s motors that you could put up mate.

Also, any ideas who runs that dark blue SK series eight wheel Merc tipper that I saw running through Woodstock a few months back?

Cheers
Mark

Just found this, Mark whilst searching the net

The blue SK Merc sounds like LA Lockhart Plant; They had several but are replacing them with Dafs. If it had no signwriting then it could be one that’s been sold.

A couple of Grundon preservations.

Yes Nathan it is. When I was an Apprentice on Transport Dept at Cowley in the early 80s, I went up to Leyland Trucks, Leyland,Lancs with Mick Freeman & bought the old girl back to Cowley, she was at the time painted in the old Leyland fleet colours Blue/white, eventually finding her way to Long Hanborough!
Regards
Chris

I think this one’s from Wigginton near Banbury.

Ah! and for me. Anyone remember the real ones of these, or maybe a bit before your time. I reckon I’d have travelled on 'em, a few time as a young 'un.

Nice to see a post from you George, I was going to ask where you’d been? Re the buses, Hanborough museum has one I’m sure they use it through Oxford in tourist season. I posted a pic on here a while ago of one I saw on the High Street. Mind you my knowledge is limited if it doesn’t have a tipper on the back or have GWR on the tanks

Hi Nathan, just been a bit busy of late, with various things, and my computer was acting up a bit, sort of over heating & keep shutting down! :astonished: Had to wait for my young 'un to come back long enough to fix it, as he seems to know what he’s doing inside these things. Not like me, anything that doesn’t require some pipe grips or a big hammer and I’m stumped! Went to Hanborough a year or so back, but not much going on the day I was there, still quite interesting though. :sunglasses:

This old girl was still working at xmas in oxford on the theatre staging work in oxford , looked quite tidy was missing a o licence though ! :open_mouth:

I got a new toy!Unfortunately my faithful old 55 plate DAF is going, & here’s her replacement, purged my new Scania into Oxygen today from the DAF as you can see from pic’, 1st day out tomorow, she got 203 Ks on the clock so she ready to rack ‘em up! Also pic’ of my boy Charlie, age 6, Wagon mad already!
