Old Firms in Oxford Area

Hi
Does anyone remember AMEYS OF OXFORD before they became ARC. Ran out of their yard in Wotton just down the road from WERRELLS yard

Yeah I remember them I worked for them at Lechlade, the first lorry driving job I had at 21. Used to go to the yard at wotton to pick up spares.

J.Curtis of Oxford had a yard in what is now an industial park behind Mc Donalds Botley road. Oxford.

Hi davidcox : welcome to the sight and seasons greetings to you. Yes I remember Ameys, used to see a lot of there tippers about, but I found this picture in a mag. a bit back and wondered if it was the same firm. I can’t say I ever knew they were into van work but i also saw a pic of an old wagon in Oxford, I think it was an S type Bedford, so that would have been a bit back. I don’t know who’s picture this is so please remove it if it infringes copyright.

Hi Big G-unit
Yes this looks like their Wotton yard, storage shed from around the 60s, but it obviously isn’ t because the caption states it’s Frome. The Wotton depot was of a very similar design
Other lines of transport they ran were;-
PREMIX ready mixed concrete.
A Plant hire section at Wotton (for whom I drove a low loader!) also had mobile cranes.
And the ‘Storage and distribution’ section. In the Oxford area they ran mainly small vans as in your photo and four or five small BMC/Leyland flat bed artics that were all rope and sheet and where at a tender age I learnt how to tie a ‘DOLLY’ knot.
They also owned COWLEY CONCRETE which was situated off the Radley road Abingdon. (I used to take pre-stressed beams from there) and is now Radley green housing estate.
They also owned CONBLOCK out at Stanton Harcourt.
Also AMEY ASHPHALT with tippers running hot ashphalt from Sutton Courtney.
David

When I was a kid our family would travel up from hampshire to visit relatives in MIddle Barton where my mother was born, I remember a haulage company in the village *(it may of just been workshops) . Was it Prior’s, I’m sure they had steeple aston on the trucks? am I right? Are they still there? I have not been through Barton in the last 20 years so I may have this wrong.

Hiya …has no one got any photos of IICR Dales they had a fleet of Volvos(dark Blue)They had a drying plant just south of Banbury and over the Motorway.
I hav’nt been in that yard since 1980.I suppose thats gone now has it■■?..Looking at the Leyland lowloader cor can you remember the queues in Banbury
everthing going B/ham to Southhampton had the obligatory stop in Banbury and Friday afternoon travaling north you can’nt explane how bad it was.

3300John : Can’t help you with Dales but what you say about Banbury being a bottle neck I can well remember! Running out of the West Mids. and still having ties with Oxford I used to long for the M40 to open, but when it did, if I had to drive I would do day runs in our, by then, old Leylands. Now being a bit noisey when thrapping down the motorways, I found myself electing for the old road up and down through Banbury, only then I had it almost to myself, so found the day much less stressful.

mikey 1964 : Did you have a look on page 1 of this thread, Ithink it was MGb who asked about Priors and got a few replies. I also got Bubbs to put a picture on from his Scrapbook thread, as I didn’t know how to do it back then!

davidcox : Thanks for that information, it proves you are never to old to learn! As I said I can remember seeing the tippers about and also the civil engineering linked motors often over Stanlake way by the gravel pits, but can not recall ever seeing the vans, yet it would seem it was quite a big operation. You mention that they owned Cowley Concrete, so I wondered if you might recall the firm I was enquiring about, when I started this thread, called Dykes Bros. who IIRC carried for Crendon Concrete. (see first post, page 1)

Big G-Unit, thanks. I’ve gone back over page one and that confirms who they were, I spotted the picture earlier but did not read the post before it. Thanks again.

Hello ,heres a pic of one of Dales F10s for 3300John

Cheers Bubbs.

3300john The Dales yard is still there it’s now called Valley Solutions. Trucks are now painted White…

Hi 3300john,
I used to pull coal up from South Wales in a bulker for Cannons of Milton, we had 10 wagons on double-shifted so we did 20 loads a day, Dales of Banbury had 10 as well, we ran Volvo FL7s at 38 tons (do not laugh, it was embarissing enough & the memories still make me cringe!), Dales ran FL10s. The other haulier on it was Meeks, they were from up North, black cab with Meeks in large red/white lettering on the cab side if I remember right, cannot remember exactly where they were from?

Hi adr.
Did you run the coal from Baddersley to Didcot as well ?

ADR… I think you’ll find Meeks were from Luton.

Dales yard was in Kings Sutton IIRC.

Don’t think that was the same Meeks,

I think they (Meeks) were from Mansfield way.

Just found this on Bubb’s Scrapbook thread, hope it helps with the debate! Also found some stuff on Meeks of Luton but no picture. :frowning:

My mistake Meeks were from Kirby in Ashfield

Ha, I should have read all the post, so I was part right. they were from Luton as well.

Meeks of Luton is A E Meek.Light blue volvos with yellow lettering. Not sure if they are still in business though. Were based just behind the Vauxhall parts warehouse that can be seen from M1 just North of J11

They had the Vauxhall/Bedford parts contract.
